XP Pro, IE6 & IE7, Everything running slowly and freezing!
      #318024 - Mon Nov 27 2006 07:21 PM

Friends, it is a while since my last posting simply because I purchased the upgrade to make my XP Pro legitimate and I have had great fun just surfing and enjoying the pleasures of PC usage.

Anyway, recently while surfing (about a month) IE6 very often ran very slowly and froze often . Following a search on this forum I ran Ad-Aware, Spy-bot and Norton Anti-virus but to no avail!

I then took the advice of a neighbour and downloaded IE7 in the hope that things would improve, they didn't and it appears the problem is worsening!

Is there anything else I should try, please keep it simple?

Regards, Peter.

Have you used CCleaner and also defragged your hard drive recently?

Thankyou Greysts for your response.

I have never used CCleaner for fear of removing vital parts of the programming, I do not understand what can be removed or retained. I am not totally naive but the jargon that is supplied under the tuition or help sections of many programmes leaves me completely overwhelmed.

As for the defrag' it is one of the first things I tried because I understood that it could tidy up the loose ends, so to speak!

Is there an idiots guide to using CCleaner online?

Regards Peter.

The older I get the worse I get to reason logically!!!

There is of course an online forum and helpdesk for the programme, I shall peruse the site to seek guidance!

Apologies, Peter.

Spencer, thankyou for taking the trouble to try and help.

I took your advice and following the instructions carefully have removed plenty of C... Rubbish which has elevated my surfing speed enormously.

Thankyou again, Peter.

Help, things are back to where they were before!

I have run, Ccleaner but only in Internet Explorer, because I am unsure in the other sections what is safe to "fix"! I would hate to remove something from the registry that is vital! I do not fully understand all the instructions.

I have also run, Ad-Aware newest version with updates, Spy-bot also with recent updates and Norton Anti-virus also topped up with new updates and a new subscription.

Nevertheless IE7 is still freezing solid, I then close reboot and select the same website but it makes no difference! Have I possibly downloaded with an .avi or .mpeg file something that could be causing all the problems.

I visit several forums to join in with the chat and download small files for later enjoyment, but could this be the cause of the freezing? It really is beginning to be a frustrating problem.

I have read many bad reports about IE7 but I was experiencing the same with IE6 so I am unsure if that is the reason.

In all honesty would I be better advised to download Firefox?

Regards, Peter.

I suggest you run CCleaner in its default settings and clean and run the cleaner. In the Issues section Scan for Issues and then click fix. It will ask you if you want to backup, click yes and then cick Fix Issues.
You can always then restore them if you have a problem.
Regarding IE6 & Ie7. I have both running on both my machines with no problem but like a lot on this forum I prefer to use Firefox and use it on both.
You cant go wrong downloading it and giving it a try.

Apologies for not replying sooner, I have been on a short holiday before the festivities begin!

I have tried as suggested but it made no difference.

Taking the suggestions of others seriously I might even abandon IE7 in favour of Firefox?

Thanks for all the ideas,
Regards Peter.
