PC Switches off
      #317698 - Sun Nov 26 2006 12:41 AM

Can you help me?

I'm at my wits end. I recently bought a dual core 5000 Athlon PC. The company I bought it from could not get hold of the 5000 processor as they were in short supply. I agreed to order the pc, they would install a 4600 Dual core Processor & I would send it back to them to fit the 5000 proccesor when it arrived.

The PC had been working fine with the 4600 processor for 3 months, & last week I sent the pc back for them to fit the 5000 Processor.

It arrived back Thursday evening, Friday it switched itself off. This happened a few times on first switching on.When it eventually started it would run ok. I could run several 3d applications (i.e. Maya & 3D Studio) perfectly ok for 6 hours or more. I thought I'd run Scandisc to check the hard drive.

This was scheduled for the next reboot. When it ran, it completed 4 stages out of 5 all ok, but seemed to lock up on 38% on checking the FREE SPACE.

I rebooted and when I tried pressing keys on the keyboard to cancel the scan, it would not escape the scan.

Now it keeps on switching off after about 10 minutes of the scan( it won't get past the scan stage)

Is this a problem of overeheating?

The only thing that makes me wonder is that I had exactly the same problem with my other pc, a Packard Bell Athlon 1900. Both systems are running XP.

Eventually, after numerous fruitless attempts with the Packard Bell pc, I left it off for about 3 days, then it started perfectly ok, first time.

The only thing common to both is I installed Nero Image Drive. On a post on a Microsoft Forum it says it installs Advanced SCSI Programming Interface (ASPI) layer By default, Windows XP does not include ASPI support." This can cause Windows XP to shutdown.

I installed ASPI which was part of Nero Premium, it has to be installed to
mnt images burnt by Nero. Could this be the problem?

What do you think, should I send the PC back? It cost £1100, so I am pretty desperate.

What changes can I make in the BIOS?

Hope you can help,

Mike Spencer

We could go through a long list of things to try but, to be honest, I think your best bet is to take it back and demand a refund or insist 'they' get it working.

This is really a problem for your supplier. Unless they can come up with some whiz-bang idea for fixing your pc, I think you should get them to re-install the 4600 processor and compensate you for the difference monetarily.

What you have now is obviously pretty useless! They have to supply you with something that works - it's not your problem to sort out stuff like this.
