Hi folks, I'm just writing a quick post as the webuser community provided provided me with a great deal of useful (and constructive!) feedback on my previous site, apnretail.co.uk My new site has come about as I wanted to get to grips with google maps and I figured that the best way to learn something was to have an application in mind. What I came up with is a wifi hotspot search tool which displays the hotspots on a map, the idea being that you can search for hotspots in a place you are visiting. Anyway, I digress, the site is at http://www.findmesomewifi.com and I'd appreciate any feedback. Also see if you can break it as its one of my first attempts at using javascript with AJAX so I'll be the first to admit its probably not bomb proof! Cheers Phil

Well the search engine worked for me and I found several hotspots in my area by using the site.
I love it! It's straight forward, clear and easy to navigate. A clever site and one that will be immediately useful to many people.
well done.

Good idea and worthy of success. A couple of points though, the map takes far to long to load on a dial up connection and the search engine seemed to search forever so I gave up. Also the right hand column i IE6 on my browser is not being rendered correctly and this may be due to the CSS box problem as it works fine in Firefox, although the left hand Google ad box did seem out of position. It also works well in Opera.
Good effort, sort the minor issues and a good useful site is in the making. Well done.

Hi homersaysdoh, Can you tell me what the script eror was and what your browser is, it would be useful to get the line number that the error occured on to see if its something I could code around.
chris_edd, I'll have to give it a go over dial up, I've been a bit spoiled with only trying it over broadband. I think that the main speed issue will be with the maps though as they are hosted by google and probably will be quite slow over dial up (they're not always that quick on a broadband link!)
Cheers for the comments so far Phil

Very impressive? How do you keep the site updated? Where does the WiFi info come from? I just looked at my own area and it showed the garage just down the road as a hot spot. Unfortunately the diggers moved into the site a fortnight ago and started digging out the tanks and knocking down the kiosk! Your site says the supplier is tMobile so I suppose it's down to them to update.

I still cannot get it to work, what would be useful on the front page is a "how to use this site" Are you meant to put in all 3 criteria, or a mixture of any 3. I have tried all these options and still cannot get it to work. I am using IE6 I have tried to copy the script error below for you Line 171 Char 4 Error Document/element is null or not an object Code 0 URL http/www.findmesomewifi.com
Do you want to continue running scripts on this page Yes/No Hope this helps

Thanks for the feedback homersaysdoh, I'll check the line number. To use the search you need to pick either a town from the dropdown list and then click the search button. If you ppick a postcode (or a portion of one), that takes precedence over the town name. The radius option doesn't need to be selected to get any results back. Greysts, I'm working on a tool to allow users to add hotspots to the system and also to be able to update hotspots because as you've noticed, sites come and go! Cheers Phil

Hi,
Searched my town and got results!(IE6). There is a small yellow info icon in the bottom left of my screen and that says "Done but with errors on the page"....? Says error line 66, Char:4, "documentElement is null or not an object".
All a mystery to me....but looking forward to seeing what may materialise. Will it work for abroad as my partner travels in Germany quite a bit - don't seem to be able to get any results there?

Heidi, I had a look at the search an it was causing those particular errors when 'non english' charachters (such as Ö,ß and Ä) are in the town name. I've tweaked it a bit so you now get the towns list back for Germany and you can then see the hotspots, its still not perfect though! Cheers Phil

Phil,
Cheers for that - did a search on the German town in question and got a result. Thanks for tweaking

The actual Google maps thingy seems to be pointless.
Did a quick search and there's a competitor who lists the various hotspots in an easy, quickly scrolable list of hotspots in all the towns. Not something that takes an age and has to be clicked on by balloon for each seperate hotspot in the towns and cities.
Just simplify it and it will be sorted.

I like the website very much as you can see the hotspots near to the place you will want a hopspot. A list is a very good idea if you know the area but sometimes you need to see it on a map. The second Google advert box should be taken off as it makes a white space at the bottom of the page in Firefox.

I will be removing the second google ad box as it does mess up the layout a bit! With regards to doncstrians comments about the map layout being pointless, the idea of the site is that it presents the hotspots in a graphical manner so that users who don't know an area and are therefore looking for hotspots will easily be able to see where the hotspots are in an area that they are unfamiliar with. Most people search first for their home town or an area they know, making the added value of a map redundant. Cheers for the feedback Phil
