Web page closes extremely slowly from top to bottom...
      #317248 - Wed Nov 22 2006 10:49 PM

Hi, occasionaly after a particularly long 'computing session' (usually online) I have noticed that my computer behaves strangely. For example, when I 'close' it, the last thing that is left up and running - probably a web page - will close extremely slowly from top to bottom e.g. may take seconds rather than split-seconds, and it is clearly visible to close from top to bottom, finally revealing the desktop behind. It is kinda spooky when you see it happen. Also once or twice exactly the same thing has happened to the 'Start menu'. [Windows XP Home, SP2]. Anybody know what's going on?

My first thought would be insufficient on board memory or too many temporary IE files. Can you give us the PC spec.

The laptop PC spec is: CPU 2.66GHz; RAM 512MB; HDD 40GB.
I occasionaly do a 'disc cleanup', particularly for the C:/ drive. But I do find that Windows XP is a bit hit-or-miss when it comes to cleaning up Temporary Internet Files (IE6), but maybe there are some settings I have not adjusted correctly. I have just checked my directory of Temporary Internet Files and found 3,848 objects dating back to 01/01/2006. They are all cookies. What is your advice, please?

I would download CCleaner from here and run that. If you run it in it's default settings it will clear out everything including all your cookies. That means you will lose all your stored passwords. If your happy that you know them all then let it run. I also use the Issues tab to sort out the registry. How often do you defrag your hard drive?

Thanks Greysts. But I have concerns about CCleaner after reading a thread about it called Crap Cleaner. But I understand that if I uncheck certain boxes it will be more user friendly for novices. But also I am not too keen on losing all my passwords as I like stuff like that to remain intact. Someone recommended Steve Gould's 'Cleanup!' - would that be better for me??? I have only defragged once in the last year, I guess that hasn't helped the situation.

CCleaner is perfectly safe to use. When you open the programme go into Options, Cookies and choose the cookies you wish to keep. On the front page remove the tick from 'Autocomplete form history'.

You bet your sweet life it hasn't!!! You should defrag at least once a month and preferably more often than that.

I will try the CCleaner in the next few days. On the subject of defragging, can I help the computer back to 'normal' by defragging it more often, from now on? And will it ever get back to a condition equivalent to if I had defragged it monthly???

One defrag will sort it all out it one hit. The first one will take a very long time but if you do it regularly it should be a lot quicker.
