Pal of mine has a 2 year old Epson C62 printer, after putting it to good use it now reports: "Parts inside your printer are at the end of their service life. Contact your dealer for replacement."
He's asked me if there's a work around this problem to save money. After advising the obvious, dump it and buy a new one, price should not spoil his Christmas plans, I went searching. A number of forum answers focused on the SSC Service Utilityfor Epson Stylus Printers. a freeware program which might extend his printer's life.
Can anyone here vouch for it's reliability or possibly suggest an alternative method please?

I've used SSC at the recommendation of Puta, but it wasn't for the same reason, George. It was for a printing problem resulting in resetting the counter. It's an excellent utility though for Epson printer users.

It works with the older epson printers but not the later models , i tried it on my brothers cx3600, which said " Parts inside your printer are at the end of their service life", which he ignored, and only rang me when all the lights started flashing and the printer wouldn't work. we cleaned the waste ink pad and even though there was very little in it we still couldn't get the error cleared. he bought a new one today in "curry's" (DX5000 all in one) for £90, (£50 off).
it seems that when you run the " printhead cleaner" it adds points to your maintenance log, when the points reach a certain number, kabamm, it needs serviced by an epson dealer. my advice is only use the print head cleaner when absolutely necessary.
i have tried SCC in mine, it's a DX 4800, it won't show current value (an error occurred) but says it has reset the counter. so i don't know whether it has worked or not. why do manufacturers install this self destruct function.

Thanks bricat and Hello_There. I'll pass on your remarks and let him decide whether to try the program or just bite the bullet and go shopping.
Knowing him and the amount of printing he does then the C62 has been a good servant over the two years. Mine's a C62 as well, older than his even but only used for documents never photos which is my pal's main useage.

I don't think the program will assist your friend with his problem. The "good" thing with Epson printers is that they are cheap and if he's used it a lot over the two years, then it's worth just ditching and purchasing a new one.

Seems the SSC helped a little after all. Here's the reply I received today:
"It's working. As usual our eldest sorted it out for me - with a bit of that programme of yours (SSC), a bit of cursing, a bit of fiddling, and a bit of "I'm not too sure what I've done". Whatever, it now works. Thank all who helped me would you please?"
Duly done! Thank you Hello_There and bricat.
