graphics card upgrade options
      #316891 - Tue Nov 21 2006 01:58 AM

I have a Intel® Desktop Board D845GVSR on my emachines 3260, I have boosted the ram to 1gig and given it a second 200gig hard drive but know want to upgrade the graphics. It presently only has onboard graphics and can't cope with to much graphically, games etc. what are my options? from what I can tell i need something with a pci interface does this include pci express or is that out of my motherboards league? I'm looking at something not too dear, second hand say but also not too outdated thats not much better than what i've got and would be good for vista when it comes along. can some one give me some general pointers so I can go off and check out ebay etc. Cheers guys and Gals!

Hi Glen, im afraid it looks bad. From what i can see here it looks as though your only option for a graphical upgrade is PCI and not PCIe.
Have a look at these,,
Ge-Force FX5200 PCI
Inno3D Nvidia Ge-Force 5200 PCI
Sapphire Radeon 9250
XFX Ge-Force 6200 256mb
These cards are going to be a decent upgrade from what youve got but as its PCI im afraid it wont set your world on fire.
Have a look at the 'B' grade ones as there is a good saving to be made from the rrp.
Hope this helps.

cheers
what exactly is b grade is it without software or second hand or just 'on sale'? I quite fancy the XFX Ge-Force 6200 256mb it seems reasonably priced more MB for me money etc. by the way i forgot to mention i have upgraded the processor in my pc to a Pentium 4 3.06Ghz would that make a difference to this upgrade or is it strictly down to the motherboard limiting what i can go for?

B grade simply means someone has bought it, didnt like it and returned it. Its then graded to see if its suitable for re-sale and thats about it. Just as an example i bought a 74gig 10,000rpm Raptor hard drive for something like £50 less than retail as it was returned but it still had all its packaging and disks. You get your usual rights to return for exchange or refund (just incase it is faulty) but the beauty is, if you need to return a B grade item it is always replaced with a new one.
As for your processor, as its a P4 3.06gig (am i right in thinking its a 533 fsb, dont matter if you dont know) it will still move pretty quick but your ability to upgrade your graphics is strictly down to your mobo and what slots it has.

whoops looks like my b grade XFX Ge-Force 6200 256mb is infact pci express or at least not pci as it neither fits the space or the slot i will have to check further and see if maplin will change this for me, i'm sure they will, pity as it did seem to be a good deal!

It could be an AGP slot that you've got. What colour is the slot?

Glens specs.
Its pci only but i think the fault lies with me.
It looks as though i linked to a non-pci graphics card and that is the one Glen chose.
If this is ithe case then im terribly sorry for any hassle this has caused you .
Saying that, Maplins do have a good return policy and ive never had any problems with them on this score before.
Once again sorry for making such a simple mistake.

No worries The Daddy Maplin took it back it's winging it's way back to them now! Their a white slots I have 3 if that helps the options in the bios was between agp and pci. Do the bios now whats there or is it just you have to set them how you want/need? From checking out on wikipeadia i recon their pci but obliviously I'm no expert!

I have checkedabout and it was AGP on the card I got it had connections like this http://www.kids-online.net/learn/click/details/agp.html
so i have to check another one cheers anyway people.

Nice one Maplins .
If your motherboard looks like this then its pci only. You have 3 PCI expantion slots and the 2 black slots are your memory. Saying that if it gives an AGP option in the BIOS then im not quite sure what to say. With no AGP slot the im pretty certain it cant do anything other than pci.
Maybe the bios you have for your mobo is a generic one which is specific to the range and not the board.

That's the baby. by the way after looking about i have bought the radion 9250 from maplin seeing as there was less hidden added extra charges and i now know their good at returns if things go wrong! I started buying it from novotech and between the quoted price it had doubled by the time vat and delivery ,which was longer than maplin, were added! I find that carry on infuriating and will not bother with them again surly they must realise that is what people will do! Good upfront service gets return trade srewing people doesn't!

Im very happy you got it sorted.
Maplins may not be the place to buy the cutting edge of computer equipment but they can have some cracking deals.

Yes you may need to disable the onboard graphics.
You do this in the BIOS choosing by the appropriate setting on the video options.
Have a look through the manual and if you have any problems post back.
