Mobile Phone T&C's Query.

Nothing to do with the Internet, just something we don't understand. At Christmas one our lads presented Herself with a mobile phone - pay as you go -even stuck a £20 card on it. A nice gesture but being old fogeys we never saw any need to carry a mobile. However, it has come in handy on the odd occasion when Herself phones me from wherever, "Come pick me up".

Suddenly, one day the phone no longer works, today a friend took her to a local branch of Orange to have them check it out. Turns out Orange had deactivated the number because the phone has been rarely used, the number being assigned to someone else. Hang about, there's still £8 not used on the card, young salesman says in mobile phone terms that's is not worth anything!

Ok, Orange have agreed to reactivate the phone in three days. Question is, do they have the authority to deactivate in the first place?
What's she supposed to do, phone all her friends when on holiday, shouting "YooHoo! It's me and I'm sitting by the Pool - it's 85 degrees here."? Or make other daft calls we often can't help hearing, costing a bomb, just to keep the phone operating.

We never saw any T&C's and young, "Eight pounds is nowt these days" salesman never enlightened her.

I'm afraid George they have every right to do so as do all the big providers on PAYG set-ups.
It will be in the original documentation somewhere explaining this.
It's a security issue.
To simply use your phone briefly to keep it 'active' shouldn't be too much trouble, and indeed it costs a bomb not actually using it!

Thanks Fusion, just as I feared, they have you by the wotsits either way. Herself will have go out more often so I can be called to collect her, she'll like that.

We didn't have mobiles until about 6 or 7 months ago, then we both got ones with Orange PAYG. We rarely use them for actual phone calls, the landline is much cheaper, but we text! It's nice because I'm on my own a lot as my husband works long hours and he just texts me whenever he's got a break. He also uses it if he's out and delayed from coming home for some reason or wants to know if I need anything from the shops. It's useful for sending messages to people when it would be inconvenient for them to take a phone call. The text just waits until either it's convenient or they switch their phone on. So get yourself a mobile too and get texting, George! I can't imagine how we managed without mobiles for so long! Bluetooth is handy too.

Thanks Madeline, mobiles definitely not for me, anyway, Herself does not drive so it's no use me phoning her to pick me up from the pub!

I dread the day they allow mobiles to be used on aircraft, that's the day we'll consider giving up foreign holidays.

You're welcome, George. We used to think the same as you do. All the same, it's quite nice to be able to take photos, make little video clips just with your phone!

o2 online is the best to be on when pay as you go is concerned in my opinion. You get basically £30 worth free a month for topping up £10 a month and you still have the £10 to spend on whatever.
