I have just spent the best part of 10 days reinstalling software on a friend's machine that had to have a new hard disc, so I have reccommended that he back up his important software onto, perhaps, an external hard disc so that it won't be such a lengthy job to reinstall when the disc crashes next time.
Can anyone recommend any good backup software that would be suitable for someone who is not very "technical". Genie Backup Master and Acronis True Image look good, but has anyone used either of these and are they as good as their producers suggest? He would be mainly interested in backing up his O.S. (if one can back up Windows XP Pro, that is)and Microsoft Office plus some files to do with his work rather than the entire hard disc
Also, can anyone recommend a good external hard disc? I saw a portable Seagate 60 GB drive the other day in France for 60 euro (around £40 at todays exchange rate) and wondered if that would fit the bill.
Any info. gratefully received.

I don't know about Genie, but I've just got Acronis True Image 9.0 and it seems fine to me. It can be bought from Amazon for £15.97 delivered, which is much cheaper than anywhere else I found. There's a tutorial for the previous version, True Image 8.0, here, which is probably still relevant. I can't recommend a hard drive as I got ours from our local PC shop and the guy there put it together himself. Until now, I've been using it to back up stuff using the Windows backup facility.

Many thanks Madeline, I will give Acronis True Image a look. I have their Disc Director Suite which seems very good so perhaps True Image is too.

I never heard about Genie software before, but I've just looked trough some reviews about it. So as for features Genie and True Image 10 are alike, but as far as I understood Acronis is simpler in use. For example Genie doesn't posses with "one click drive backup" (a convenient tool that makes a full system backup with one button click.) feature. As for my personal experience, I can say that ATI is very convenient and effective backup tool that never let me down.

That's good to know as I've only just got it. I'm glad it's simple to use too! Actually, I've got ATI 9.0 so I hope the same applies to that version.

I had always used Drive Image 7, a couple of weeks ago a new computer was installed and would not recognise DI7. Apparently DI7 does not work on RAID drives or so I've been advised.
Fortunately this coincided with a special offer of a free Acronis True Image 7 for all readers of a certain magazine. It works a treat, RAID or no RAID.

I saw that offer of Acronis True Image 7 in the other mag too, but the 22MB download put me off! ATI 9 was cheap from Amazon, so I'm happy with it.

Just as well Madeline, I was fortunate, there was so much demand for the freebie the offer was withdrawn due to pressure on the website. Apart from the mag offering it, someone posted on another forum the offers whereabouts which may have started a mad scramble.

The strange thing was that they were offering a cheap upgrade to ATI 9.0 "for as little as £21.35", which is more than I paid for it on Amazon!
