Windows XP Home Upgrade problems
      #309914 - Mon Oct 16 2006 06:57 AM

I have 2 problems I need help with please:

1) Laptop, came pre-installed with ME, I upgraded to 2000 Pro (think I had to load 95 first but can't remember). I can't upgrade to XP Home from 2000 Pro, and apparently can't uninstall 2000 or get back to ME in order to run the XP Home upgrade. For some reason laptop didn't come with ME on disk in order for re-installing, does have valid Product Key though stuck to bottom of laptop. Was hoping I'd be able to download ME from Microsoft and authenticate with my product key but can't find this facility on their website strangely

2) Desktop, bought 2nd hand hard-drive with XP Pro on it, turned out to not be authentic, hence the purchase of the XP Home Upgrade, can't use the Product Key Facility microsoft recommends as it returns the error that the OS doesn't match the key, this I assume is because the key is for Home while the machine is running Pro. Presumably if I can find a way of getting ME onto the machine, I can then use the upgrade disc. Any other ideas gratefully received.

Many Thanks

Craig.

1) There is no way of downloading Me from Microsoft. If you have a valid copy of XP on CD and you have all the relevant backups, the easiest way out of your predicament is to boot the laptop with the XP CD on board and follow the prompts to delete W2000, format the disk and start over with XP.

2) Same answer as 1 above.

Unfortunately neither of those answers will work if you've only bought an Upgrade version of XP. It seems a bit pointless buying Me simply so you can use your upgrade CD. It will probably be cheaper in the long run to buy an OEM version of XP from eBuyer.

Have a look at this as a place to buy your OEM version of XP Home.

Thanks for that. I don't really want to spend that much having bought the XP Home upgrade. If I can get hold of the recovery discs, will that mean I'll be able to reinstall?

Probably not as Recovery CDs are normally machine specific but there's only one way to find out.
