I recently tried to re-install some windows xp components and it all ended in tears! I keep getting a stop error with code 0x08E. the computer runs fine in safe mode and it has disabled most of my services, when I try starting any it tells me that plug and play services or another service required is unavailable. If someone could help me I'd be very grateful.

In Safe Mode have you tried System Restore to a date where you know the PC worked properly?

I tried that too, I can't remember what the outcome was but I don't think it helped.

Can you please give me the exact text of the error message you get when you try to log on normally.

I can't give you exact text at the moment as I am away from my computer. It is a stop error, it occurs as soon as the computer has finished the startup process, always exactly the same amount of time before restart. The text at the top says an error or problem has occured... the system must restart to protect your computer from damage. It does a memory dump and tells me to check drive space, turn off bios things like caching and shadowing (which I haven't done yet) and something else about safe mode and changing advanced settings using f8. The error code is 0x000000008E and there are other error codes in brackets next to it.

I just found this from someone else on the internet, it is exactly the same...
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the Stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.
Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.
Technical information:
*** STOP: 0X0000008E (0XC0000005, 0X8546FB6C, 0XB8926A3C, 0X00000000)
Beginning dump of physical memory Physical memory dump complete. Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance

That might look like your error but I still need ALL the text of your own error to have even a chance of knowing what's wrong.

Hi, sorry for delay. Back on my own computer now. I've managed to solve the problem (as such) It appears to be due to the automatic updates, which I have now disabled and the computer is running fine again?! Not sure what to do about the updates.
Thank-you for your help.

That I don't understand. It sounds as if you still have some Windows Services disabled that should be running. Have you installed XP SP2 yet?

It is rather strange, I have checked the services and put them back to default except auto updates as everytime I enable auto updates my computer restarts itself. I think I've got some microsoft vulnerabilities on my computer but I'm unable to resolve them without updates. It may be unrelated but I'm also having problems with Trend micro, when it does an update the next time I start up the computer I get a message saying problem with services and controller app, which needs to close, then the computer goes into auto shutdown with error 107...! After 2 restarts trend micro says it has detected a problem and has restored to an earlier setting, which makes everything ok until it updates again.

I think I would be inclined to head over to the HJT thread and post a log. It's just possible that your problems may be virus or trojan related.
