i am have serious trouble... i've tried the general ways to restore my system, i've even gone as far as to redownload microsoft help to correct the exe issue. when i try to access exes, it is tellin me to view the folder associations... i've looked and don't see the connection for the fix. no files (mp3s, misc. programs, etc) have the actual icon. all looks correct when i right click and go to properties, however for some reason there's no connection in windows to recognize the programs anymore. double clicking wont work and when i right click "open" is not even listed as an option. i dont want to be difficult, but for some reason i am unable to restore this computer, let alone run a reinstall on it. what should i do... can anyone offer any advise?

Have you been editing the registry or attempting to clean up the registry?

well i went to a website that allowed me to download certain fixes for windows... however only a few of them actually import; the rest give another strange error message saying that its not able to fully import, etc. i'm at a loss... i mean, all i want to do is restore it. i tried one cd, but realized it was for my laptop and not pc, to reinstall windows xp. if that doesn't work, will i need to just buy a new computer?

First, open the File Types dialog from any Explorer window (Tools | Folder Options | File Types Tab). Scroll down to where .EXE would be in the alphabetical order and make certain .EXE is not there (if it is, then remove it). Finally, select the New button, type in EXE for the extension and select the Advanced button. From the list pick "Application." It should look something like this.

And, hopefully, this should cure the problem

if this doesn't work. i'm not sure where to go without reformatting.
try running sfc \scannow
click on START\RUN and type CMD into the address bar and click OK.
At the DOS PROMPT type SFC /SCANNOW. note the space between SFC and /SCANNOW. hit enter.
It may ask you to put your XP disc in the drive.
