We all need to state the obvious occasionaly. That said, people like good, reliable, FREE software. So much so we take it for granted.
For new PC users, the following free programs are well tested by myself and by many others:
ZoneAlarm (firewall), Adaware (spyware remover), Opera 9.02 (browser), my personal choice AVG anti-virus
I for one am grateful to the software companies who have make them available FREE, as they have become truly essential. I will be passing round the hat later!
Are there other basic utilities that you would suggest to new web users?

I have used za for a long time but i now use the comodo free firewall which is better.

Besides all programs above I can also recommend VLC media player, VLC is simply the best player I've ever used.
