Higher search engine ratings
      #307185 - Fri Sep 29 2006 10:56 PM

I have very limited knowledge on the way the search engines find any sites.
I know it involves keywords, but does the name of the site count for any thing.
For example if you had a taxi firm in Liverpool and that was the traffic you were trying to attract would the domain name www.liverpooltaxi.com get you any higher in the SE results if some one searched "Liverpool Taxi".
Just for the record I do not come from Liverpool nor do I have a Taxi firm, this is purely a hypothetical question.

Many Thanks

Jeff

Search engines give a score to all the various parts of the text in a website, the headings, paragraphs, bold text, url, image title and alt tags etc.

Certain parts of the text score more than other parts, so if your website had a heading of Taxi, but only had Liverpool only in the paragraph, then the word Taxi in the heading would score more than the word Liverpool in the main body. The URL also scores fairly high.

If you seached for "taxis in Liverpool" and your URL was www.liverpooltaxi.com you probably be above most others in the listings, but it depends on the actual website too. A competitor www.localcabs.com may be above you if they have the keywords Liverpool and taxi placed in all the correct places throughout their website (headings etc).

SEO is actually very complex and there is much more to it than just this, but this is a good start.

Hi

Zippy is right - there are a lot of factors in getting
a site ranking well, and the domain is just one of them.

A great way, I'd say, is to get on the front page of
Digg, or to get the BBC to link to your website with
keywords 'liverpool taxis'.

How you do that! Ah, that's another question
:-)

Steve
