A tv series on php scripting
      #305630 - Mon Sep 18 2006 05:50 PM

I recently suggested on a tv newsgroup that a tv series on php scripting would be a good idea and it would probably be quite popular as lots of people have a hobby website even if its only photos of the family cat or dog .

The tv series would be a beginners guide to php and it would no doubt start off with very simple pieces of php code etc .

Most users on the tv newsgroup reckoned a tv series on php would have as much appeal as watching paint dry .

Fair enough - but what do users on here think of the idea ? .

My immediate thoughts are:
Is the tv the right media to use for this subject?
I would imagine that a forum type website would be far better, where each board contains an episode or tutorial on video that could be either downloaded or viewed direct and a question and answer session about the content filling the rest of that board.

Each board could be started, say, four days to a week apart.

I would open such a website myself, but I haven’t mastered html, yet alone php. And who could prepare the tutorials and produce a video for each. It would be important to have the complete set of videos before launching such a site.

What do people think? Am I just daydreaming?

You wouldn't find a TV company to give the idea the time of day. It would have a very limited audience because those who would be interested would find better on the net. For people trying to learn coding, printed media works best because it's far easier to refer to. Even using video is better placed on the net with text and diagrams alongside. TV is way too limited and restrictive.

While i dont disagree with what you say - the hardest thing about php is the getting started with it as theres so much to learn .

Once you have built up your own small collection of php code snippets its all pretty easy when you start to do cut-n-paste paste stuff with only minor alterations being needed , Much like in the same way as html uses the same tags over and over again then php uses the same php commands over and over again .

Most tutorials on the net regardless if its html / php are pretty bad and something like the masterclass series on the old .tv channel was well liked .

No doubt a tv series on php scripting would have its own website and as such everybody would be in the same ballpark with newbies being able to help other newbies .

A major problem with php tutorial websites and help forums is that everybody is at different skill levels .
