World Mental Health Day 2006
      #305261 - Sat Sep 16 2006 09:03 AM

I have built Images & Words to coincide with World Mental Health Day 2006. It's a photographic project mostly. It's not finished yet but most of it is there.

Any advice would be great but, if you suggest radical changes, I'm going to cry! I'm a social worker and I enjoy photography. This is my first serious attempt at web building. It's complicated, isn't it?

This is a description in the site itself: About IMages & Words.

Thanks

Martin.

Hi,

I like it works quite well.
My only nag is the menu on the left just dosen't go with the rest of the site. Looks a but chucked on at the last minute.
Also the Home page with 'Enter' isn't needed. Add this page to Images and Words page and rearrange it a bit.
Also 2 buttons on the little menu didn't load.

Summary: Aye it's alreet like.

Regards,
Gary

Thanks for taking a look and for posting.

Hmmm, the menu on the left (certainly wasn't chucked on - it took me all day to do that) - I don't know what else to do. I made the buttons in keeping with the colour scheme and I ought to say, found doing all that pretty tricky. (I'm a complete novice at this).

The Home Page is a bit of a compromise. I accept why it's not needed but it was a way to show a photograph straight off which I think, gives the visitor an impression of exactly what's coming up. And I like the photo! I'll have a think about combining the two pages as you mention.

Back to the left hand menus - I really don't know what else to do other than a) make the buttons fill the width of the border or b) just remove them.

Suggestions welcome!
Many thanks

Martin

Well, I have changed the home page, combining the two as Gary suggested. I'v also tweaked the design a little and tidied up the images. I noticed that the image box in GoLive was a bit bigger than the image which was causing them to degrade a bit.

I have also hosted the site under its own domain - the first time I've done that. So here's the updated site: www.imagesandwords.org.uk

Thanks

Martin

I like your site; it was interesting, informative and easy to navigate. I didn't see the original site, so I can't comment on the improvements you've made! Another thing I liked was that the pictures loaded quickly, which is important for people like me who have dial-up and all the links worked. One tiny little thing, on this page, you say:
Quote:

At times I think, words might
produce a similar affect in other situations.

I know I'm picky, but you should change "affect" to "effect"!

Thanks Madeline,

When you say things like, "interesting, informative and like," you can be picky! I was thrilled to read what you said so, thanks.

As for the effect of what you say, don't worry, I'm not affected! I'll change that this evening.

Kind regards

Martin

You're welcome and you've changed the word! You should know that I'm not a website expert and that what I said was my personal opinion, but I suppose that's what matters in the end. I've never attempted to create my own site and I think that yours is brilliant considering that you've never done one before. If I didn't know that, I'd never have guessed!

Now you've gone and spoiled it! (joking).

Madeline, I was just really thrilled to get your post. Yes I did change the word, as I was typing my reply to you actually. I know the site is quite "specialised" in that not everyone is interested in photography and not everyone is interested in mental health let alone both. At the same time, when you build some web pages, you want people to see it.

Your reaction is the best I could hope for. Experts in anything tend towards criticism that can be caught up in the detail. It's helpful to know that a < span> tag could be used instead of a < div> tag, or something but it's fabulous to know that someone saw the images and liked them!

Many thanks

Martin

You're very welcome, Martin. I like photography (other people's) and I'm interested in mental health too. I've known people who've had mental health problems; some got the help they so desperately needed, others weren't so fortunate. I've had severe depression several times in my life and was very lucky each time to have had excellent GPs who ensured that I got all the support I needed. Sites like yours can really help people who think that there's no help for them and also show health professionals what can be achieved.
