Hello,
If you read any of my posts before you'll know I'm a newbie to web-building using adobe go-live 6. Anyway my question today is; I want to put a web counter on my website so I can tell how many (if any) visit my site. Where would I get a counter and how would I add it? Do I need to know html? (I know almost none) Cheers,
- Dr T

It would certainly help a little to know some HTML, simply to be able to place it in the correct location on your page

Bravenet is useful, but sadly I can't use any of their services on my website, because Bravenet add advertising which attempt to place tracking cookies. This would be going against the content of my site.

Another non-advertising alternative is HTMLgear part of Tripod-Lycos. That stuff provides a fully moderated guestbook too, and you don't need to be hosted at Tripod/Lycos/Angelfire to use it.
Of course, by far the easiest way, is get hosted at a site which supports CGI/PHP, and insert a tiny pre-built script like I have at my domain.

I would say safeTsurfa has the best idea. To write a php script to do a hit couter aint that difficult either, and with php, you can record stats eg refferrer, ip etc. I dont know any perl (what most people call cgi), but you should be able to do the same in that. A good book, which I am learning php from is PHP in easy steps by Mike McGrath published by computer step. It has a stats sript in it and this can be altered to record hits.

Don't even need to write your own for this, I use pre-made ones, readily available for free use from many scripting tutorial sites. Try a Google search. I actually run two - the visible one, and the hidden one which logs the IP etc of every visitor who enters the domain.
I also log them again if they use the interactive items (guestbook, recommend the site mail, etc). That way, if they start up any crap on my domain, I can nail them for it with their ISP, which is essential if you are running a registered family safe site (the ICRA logo isn't there for decoration).

Hi Trundlebush
I have tried a few different counters on my websites and if you want one where you don't have to fiddle about with scripts you could try: www.statcounter.com
You just copy and paste the code into the html of each page you want to track.
They offer a large amount of features for free - no advertising on your site, no popups etc and if you have any problems in using their services they have a forum where you get plenty of help. Much better than Bravenet
