I'm trying to work out which out of the Maxtor OneTouch III, Western Digital My Book Pro and Seagate external hard drives is the best, would appreciate opinions as with all of them I have read bad reviews. I have had a Maxtor one touch III in the past which I sent back because it wasnt being recognised by my PC at times and also because the software with it wasnt backing up everything. I do know that other versions of the one I had come with Retrospect software which is better, the combo drives have this ie USB2 FW external drives, I had the USB2 one so did'nt have the Retrospect software so all in all I would buy another Maxtor External Drive.
I notice the Wetsren Digital My Book comes with Retrospect software too. Seagate are proberly the most reliable hard drive manufacturer to date but not sure what there external drives are like.
What would you go for? I'm thinking of at least 500GB to 1TB, its purely for backing up stuff.

Well no replys as yet, I ended up going for a Maxtor USB/FW Combo 500GB external drive. Maxtor even said that this drive comes with EMC Dantz Retrospect Express but it doesnt it comes with Maxtor Backup software which cant backup system files just like the 500GB USB model I had a few months ago which I sent back to the online retailer. This one I have also looks deemed to be sent back as it is advertised as coming with Retrospect Express.
The Western Digital looks promising as I have had this responce from them
"Thank you for contacting Western Digital Customer Service and Support.
Features of the included Dantz Retrospect are quoted below and include the following:
"Features
COMPLETE PROTECTION
o Versatility - compatible with both Windows® and Macintosh® computers. o Complete backups - backs up all your data, including files and folder, OS files and settings, device drivers, and applications and their settings. o Encryption - fast SimpleCrypt™ secures the data on your external drive or other backup media. o Open-file backup - built-in open-file backup for Windows XP lets you back up files that are open and in use. o Disaster recovery - use backup media to create a bootable CD/DVD for full bare-metal disaster recovery even after your computer drive fails. Restore your entire system to a new drive."
Please see the link below for details.

Maybe this thread could be used by people who are thinking of buying an external hard drive for backing up, food for thought

Well I am too late for you on this - but maybe not. Back up your Maxtor hard drive Why?
Mine failed - still whirring round normally but the PC doesnt see it.
MCM in Oxford did there usual not our fault response and Maxtor will replace under warranty but I will lose the data. I am trying other recovery firms.
The problem is Maxtor quality and to believe that just do a search on Google. Maxtor One Touch failure.
There is even a law firm preparing a suit against them.
So my advice is don't buy one, don't use the warranty replacement one, and if you are using one back that back up too.
