Hi, I see that on the Talk Talk offer of Free Broadband the modem is £29 pound which is recommended because it is said to be new tecnology for 2006 and is meant to be quicker on their network. I am seriously thinking from changing from my current ISP. Does anybody have any info on Talk Talk's claims about the modem or would I just as well be better off with my current modem.

Cheers for the quick relply- quite a few unhappy customers there on that forum. I shall carry on doing my homework before I switch but I am determined to get a better deal with paying out for my BT landline and my Wanadoo (now Orange) broadband.

tell orange or whoever you want to leave, most firms will offer a discount to keep you, can you get cable?

I could go down that route but I do not think they will beat the Talk Talk deal. I like the idea of getting a better deal on my landline than with BT and with "Free" broadband thrown in. It sounds too good to be true but with everyone getting in on the ISP band wagon maybe the competition will be in our favour. I know someone who has just gone with them for the same reasons I am thinking of and "touch wood" he has had an easy switchover and so far good service. I will be doing a bit more homework first though because it is a long signing up period - you get nothing for nothing.

Have a look at Nildram they offer FREE phone calls as part of the packages - http://broadband.nildram.net/products/dslsurf/

You should weigh up the pros and cons of changing packages before deciding. For instance, how much do you spend per month on your phone/BB and then compare overall prices and any saving. Plus how much do you value being online all the time and having no connection problems. I'm afraid I'm one of those who believes that you get what you pay for and I'd rather pay that little bit extra and stick with the "big guys" and have peace of mind.

There is wisdom in that there quote!
I had a 3mb BB with NTL, and 1MB for kids room, which was costing around £45/month. I wanted to get the 3 home pc's hooked up, so they advised a router and the usual garb. Forked out over £120 for the stuf THEY recommended, but unfortunately it was creating problems for the kids with online gaming, port openings, firewall etc etc, problems which we never had before, so I sent the stuff back and got my money back from the router company. I also had phone and tv packages with NTL.
I got so annoyed when I read some of the deals they were giving to new customers and wanted to see if I could get a decent deal for getting the three pc's hooked up another way as the router wasn't helping. NTL kept passing me to sales staff who, instead of trying to deal with what I wanted, were trying to screw me for the latest deals, phone packages, tv upgrades etc etc. I tried this several times to no avail. I got so annoyed and phoned up their customer services and complained, and told them it was grossly unfair giving spanking deals to new customers whilst long standing customers like myself were getting screwed to the wall. Needless to say they were all apologetic, but still not budging on fees, so I told them to cancel all my contracts, uplift their equipment and hung up.
A couple of hours later a manager phoned and asked what my problem was, so I told him. The guy said to leave it to him and he would look into it as the last thing that NTL wanted was a good long standing client leaving and cancelling all their packages - and they got good money from us every month.
Mr Manager from NTL phoned back, and boy, did he fix things ! Instead of the two broadand connections, I got a a third one, and all for the princely sum of £9.99 EACH per month, saving £15 on what I currently paid, AND another 1MB line and free modem thrown in as standard, PLUS, reductions in phone calls and TV packages. So I now have 1 x 3MB line and 2 x 1MB line, all unrestricted downloads and free modems all round.
All told the savings work out around £30 per month, plus we have an extra 1MB broadband line.
It's amazing what saying you're cancelling and going elsewhere can do ! I have to take my hat off to NTL for this one, and can honestly say that, during 11 years of internet connections and with a variety of companies, we have been with NTL for 5 years now and without a doubt they have been the cream of the crop. Even at the standard fees which I was paying for long and weary, their service was always top notch. I'm so glad they didn't turn it around and say, ah well, sorry to see you go - because I don't know what I would have done!
