Lexmark 5200 cartridge problem

it's been so good up til now...
suddenly my Lexmark 5200 Series printer says that my black ink cartridge is invalid. well, the troubleshooter says "invalid", the printer itself says "incorrect." i have tried a few things but can't figure out how to get the cartridge recognized. it worked up until now.
