I recently built a website (http://www.chelseamania.co.uk) and then after about a couple of weeks i added a forum to the site, but this is hosted for me by another site.
My problem is i can't seem to get anyone to join up to the forum, i don't know why this is? any help would be very much appreciated.
The site is fairly basic, as i hand coded the whole site.

Get some interesting topics started and also invite friends and family to join and contribute. It takes time for a forum to get going.
How well is your site listed with the search engines and directories? If you site isn't attracting many visitors your forum won't either. Think about finding other relevant web sites and exchange reciprocal links with them.

Getting a forum off the ground is a pretty hard thing to do if you dont already have a decent sized regular userbase .
Is it pretty safe to say you yourself have surfed other peoples websites and when you seen a empty forum you instantly clicked on the back icon ? .
Dont shoot the messenger - but other people are just doing what you yourself do .
To be honest , The best thing you could do is treat the forum as your own personal blog and in turn give people something to read if they do look at it .
But even if you do decide to do that it could still be months before other users subscribe and start chatting on your forum as it will take weeks/months for you to build up the blog type of posts on it .

The reason you are not getting anyone signing up to your forum is because its Chelsea FC!
Sorry about that
I agree with Jonny555, get your mates and family involved. If it looks busy then others will sign up.

Partly right, but I don't mean that in a nasty way (even though I'm a Manchester United fan). There is a wealth of fan sites already for nearly all football clubs, so you've got a lot of competition, most of which are already established.
You need to make your web site that little bit different to all the others, in a way that sets it apart from the crowd.

I agree with Johnny555.
I frequent a football forum and there are often people popping up saying "visit our new forum, banter, blah, blah" and they get pretty short shrift. It's hard to shift people from forums they use regularly because they build uo a rapport/friendships with other regulars.
It will take you some time to get users but stick at it.

I visit a Manchester United forum regularly. But it's one of many such forums, I tried others but didn't like them so much.
Doubtless there are loads of Chelsea forums too, yours is just another one, with very little on it as yet.
I would concentrate on the website itself. Give the fans a reason to visit and keep going back. Leave the forum on the back burner for a while. Once the site has a lot more content, people will be inclined to sign up, even if just to comment about the site.
Getting forums off the ground is difficult, I help moderate one which only launched in April, but it's getting there. Unlike your site, however, it's totally dependant on the forum in order to operate. There is very little html because it doesn't need it. Good luck with your site, it's a long road you'll need plenty of patience.
All the best - Duncan
