USB breaks down while transferring large files/folders

When I try to transfer large files to flash drive or card the transfer starts normally, will transfer for a while then breaks down. "cant read source". This happens on both usb 1.1 and 2.0 direct from the usb cards. There is space on the portable media. Drivers are up to date. Any ideas?
