I'd welcome some help in clarifying terminology.
The article on preparing to convert cassette tapes into MP3 refers to the sound card requiring a stereo 3.5 mm plug. On my laptop, the "audio device" (not actually described anywhere as a a sound card) is shown as Realtek AC97 Audio. The only input, which is a 3.5 mm socket, is described as a "microphone jack". Is this likely to be the one I need?

The Realtek AC97 is actually a sound chip embedded into your motherboard. A sound card is a seperate piece of equipment connected to the motherboard and normally found with 3 or 4 inlet/outlet ports. You could, in theory, use a microphone port but the quality would be awful. You really need a Line In port and as the article says, you should really consider buying yourself a proper sound card something like this.

Thanks for the advice, grey. I'm talking laptop rather than PC, so I don't have a dock for a PC sound card. What should I look for?

The quote is from and old Peter Cooke/Dudley Moore sketch.
Going back to your original question, if you are looking for a good quality recording and your laptop has only got a microphone input I would have to say, don't do it. You are right, you can't use a sound card so the only other choice is to try what you have got and see what it sounds like.
