PC Games
      #301637 - Sat Aug 26 2006 04:20 PM

My kids have asked me to get them some PC games because their older brother hogs the PlayStation (and me if truth be told).

I haven't got a clue as what to buy them, but I would like a decent car racing game. They are teenagers, boy and girl, and I'm still young at heart.

Can anybody recommend anything?

Thanks. We've got that on the PS2 and it is a very good game.

Just been out and bought FIA GTR Racing and Driver 3. I had the original Driver on the PlayStation 1 and found it fun, but my eldest says this one is a bit of a let down. We'll see, but seeing as I only paid £10 for the two games it won't be a great loss if it is poor.

Haven't got a clue as to what the kids would like and asking them isn't any help whatsoever.

I also liked to play 2D scrolling shoot 'm' ups. Anybody know of any good ones for the PC?

Half Life 2 end of.... (prob not suitable for kids - it isn't 2d it's an FPS, however it's the best PC game - since I was last online)

For the boys, War rock, although it says it's beta it is well beyond that, It is a big download but free! For the girls, Maybe Teen Second Life

I shall make the usual proviso that young people should be supervised in any MMORPG

I didn't really like Half Life 2, I thought Half Life 1 was a better game. I like the Quake series more, especially 1 and 2, and the unreal tournament serious is also amazing! At the moment there is only one game that I play. World Of Warcraft

Had a quick look at the War Rock site and it looks interesting. I'll have a better look a bit later and see what the lads think about it. Cheers Iain.

We've got the first Half Life game, but haven't got any further than the very start of it yet. Every time I sit down with the intention of playing a game somebody always wants me for something. I can't stand trying to play a game with constant interruptions.

War rock is in the same sort of vein as Black Hawk Down and Call of Duty, a fps. The difference is you get to fly planes, ride around in boats and drive tanks. The level of detail for a freebie game is unbelievably high, there are some minor bugs but they don't take away from the overall quality of the game.

I put the headphones on if I don't to be disturbed

Oh and Johnny for the kids, if they're into their Sci Fi I'd recommend Lego Star Wars, I've just demo'd it on the 360 and it's great fun. (actually even so for adults)

Reviews for 1 & 2

£14.99 for II & £9.99 for I

GTR is a great driving sim. GTR 2 is even better. If it's online racing you're after there's none better than Live For Speed. A good wheel is recommended for both though. Alternatively you could try Trackmania, not exactly a sim but it's great fun all the same. If it's a shooter you're after then there's stil nothing to touch Unreal Tournament 2004. There are a great number of mods for it providing endless variety. For strategy fans try Company of Heroes. I can't get enough of it at the moment.

Tricia It sounds like a Java problem, if not a Shockwave issue .In both cases an update from the relevant site will rectify the problem

Can you tell us what the title you have downloaded So we can determine which download you want

I've had a look at the specs for this game and it is Ok on Win 95/98 and XP

So it should run with no adjustment.
But you see nothing
OK Let try trick it into displaying
Need to do up to 3 downloads...Be aware that the First is off Microsoft and its
looks for a legal copy of Windows on your Hard drive (to get it) otherwise you have to update with the other 2 programs
Have to do this routine yearly otherwise some programs will never appear to run(we post the Latest update in the Security Notifications section where possible)

Download 1 is updating the DirectX driver Just click the "Continue" Button in the Yellow box on this page and it will run the download process automatically

2 Java drivers go to this forum page where I have made all the route to the right download as clear as can be (get lost otherwise)

3 Shockwave driver latest version here www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=Shockwave

And if you still have no joy, and still want to play Scrabble, take a look at Literati ON Yahoo Playing against other people
Is always busy

Hi again bedstorfromAP
thanks for the advice and the links. I have followed the links and updated directx and shockwave still nothing, i'm not sure if i have java (drivers)whatever they are! although, I can play the yahoo games that you advised for literati which is java with no problems. still can't get my scrabble though. i'm completely stumped as to why. perhaps it is the disc itself that is faulty. but thanks again you have been a great help.
tricia.

Hi, Fyfeflyer.
Yes i can get into everything in the menu, except the actual game itself, i ran a diagnostic test, that came back no problems found, so in the end i contacted the game manufacturers and they asked for a copy of the diagnostic test. am now waiting for a reply. fingers crossed they find the problem. thanks tricia.
