Dose anyone have any feedback on Sky's broadband service? I am currently with Plusnet Premier package which I have never had a problem with, but the 12 month contract is soon over & at £21.99 I feel I am paying well over the odds with all the new free/cheaper offers available. I am also looking at Talk Talk who I already have calls with & which would save me roughly £14.00 a month on line rental/calls/broadband bundled, tempting but put off by the feedback elsewhere on this forum. I am already A full Sky package customer so I'm interested in their offer but not sure as to what their Broadband service is like? Any feedback would be most welcome. I should also mention that Plusnet currently gives me 2Mb uncapped service for £21.99pm (would be 8Mb if I could get it in this area) & I really only need 6Gb download limit.

You should have received a letter from Sky telling you what your options are. Sky are trying to turn themselves into an ISP offering 'free' broadband services. It only works if your local exchange has been LLU enabled and from what you say, it hasn't. What did Sky tell you in their letter?

I've registered twice with Sky Broadband - the first time I was told I'd be contacted in early August (I heard nothing), then the second time the site told me they could provide broadband in my area and would contact me shortly (I'm still waiting). I also fear that even though they're saying they can provide broadband in my area, it doesn't necessarily mean that they are LLUing my exchange, because they also offer a pricey non-LLU service.

Hi Andrew
Yes, that's the catch. Sky are only offering 'free' BB in those areas that have already been LLU'd. For all other areas they are simply buying line time from BT Wholesale just like any other ISP and then selling it on. My letter said I could have their 'normal' BB service through my BT telephone line. That's great, but I can only get 1mb via BT because of the distance from the exchange so Sky isn't offering anything that you can't get from any other ISP. You do, of course, have to pay BT line rental up front on top of the Sky BB costs.
Even in the LLU areas, Sky aren't installing their own equipment, just buying line time from existing LLU installations.
As always with the Murdoch empire, you hand over your money then find that you don't actually get a great deal for it. You could always get an unbiased view by watching Fox News on Sky.

Sky bought out Easynet which is already a huge pan european provider so in actual fact they already have most of their network in place.
I'm not sure what changes they need to be making before they can provide the whole country but I spoke to a Sky customer service rep just yesterday who had been trialling the service (in Scotland) and he said he hadn't experienced any problems apart from the fact he hasn't been able to access his email.
I have already received my free wireless router (which can also handle 4 wired pc's at once) and letter to say BT will switch my existing broadband with Virgin over to Sky on 9th Sept.
I phoned my order to them on 24th Aug so it's taking a little longer than the 5 - 10 days they told me it would. But then they have said demand is high so it could partly be BT snowed under too.

Most of the negative posts on that board seem to be from the same person.

Thanks for the reply's although I'm still no clearer on what to do, I think choosing/changing ISP's is one of my least favorite things, just when you think you have found a good deal the list of complaints from other users puts you off. So far I have looked into Talk Talk who I already have my calls with & Sky who I already pay way to much to & should really get a social life instead. Mind you if I had read reviews on Plusnet before joining them I would have run a mile, and I have never had a problem with them. I just feel at £21.99 a month I'm paying way to much and should find a better deal. But thanks for the input and should anyone get their connection up and running in the near future I would be interested to hear what the service is like.

I have been using Pipex Broadband and Madasafish and they have both been good, but Pipex has won in terms of customer service and satisfaction.
Still investigating the up and coming Free Broadband services, hence the blog. But in my eyes Sky have simply launched to early and it will never be an option to use their free broadband option unless you do little bit check emails and read the odd website. You will still need a traditional ISP if you want to download music etc.

Hi again,
Just to update you, I now have my Sky broadband connection which was the best part of a week overdue. I phoned Sky about the delay and was gearing myself up to kick them into touch before I'd even got their service for the simple reason, they are on a premium rate number and it takes ages to get through the automated phone service then when finally getting to the right department a message would say it would be about 24 minutes before the call would be answered. I wasn't hanging around that long listening to their adverts while I paid the premium rate so hung up. After about 4 attempts at various times I finally got in a queue that was just 3 mins long so I hung on only to be given another number that was supposed to be direct to their tech department. It turned out to be a sales department but at least the woman on the other end did help and managed to tell me BT were running at 3 days overdue, but it was a week for me.
Anyway, finally got the connection yesterday and since then I have had 4 ocassions where I've not had a connection when I opened my browser. I really hope that's just one of their teathing problems because if it carries on too long they won't be keeping me as a customer.
I got the impression there was going to be loads of things available at their site but after actually logging in it was very disapointing. I could read the news or find out what's on telly.
I don't know what speed I've got (don't know how to find out) but it feels a bit faster than the connection I had with Virgin.net
I can't say too much more as I haven't had it long enough but with the missing connection on 4 ocassions in less than 24 hours my first impression is [Insert expletives here].

I've finally got my email from Sky with a number to call and a code. It looks as though I can get any of the services. I've got three weeks until the code expires... Hmm, I'm going to need to see evidence of happy SkyBB customers before I take this plunge... anyone know one?
