Digital movies
      #29956 - Fri Dec 19 2003 09:54 PM

I have taken some short digital movies (.mov) with my Olympus 300 mju and wondered if I could convert them into a format for emailing to people?

If your OS is XP you can download free from Microsoft, Movie Maker 2 where you can import and edit your movies, send as e-mail.

I've never tried e-mailing a film as usually the ISP will restrict the total amount being mailed. Checking your ISP's rules on this would be advisable before sending.

May be worth you considering, after editing, copy the movies to CDR and give to your friends to watch on computer. They may even thank you doing this in saving them a heck of a download if they are on dial up.

Thanks, I've got Movie Maker, it imports the photos but it doesn't want to know my little movie clips. I have received a few MPEG's recently which have been short and funny, and I have send clips before, using a web-cam. The clips taken by my camera are much shorter and without sound.

Hi Jen,

You could download The RAD Video Tools for Windows which will convert .MOV files to .AVI files, which can be used with MovieMaker.

.avi, TFC? They'll be big files, won't they? In my experience that's something like 100MB a minute.

There's a freeware .avi to .mpg convertor available here if it helps.

Not sure about .mov. Perhaps it will mean converting to .avi first, then to .mpg, or perhaps there's something I don't know (very likely as I haven't done much work on video capture/conversion).

If in doubt though, Silver Surfer, stick with TFC. He knows more about this sort of thing than I do, and I won't be available until the new year.

There is intelligent life on Earth, but I'm only visiting.

Hi Jen,

I've dug a little deeper and still think RAD Tools is the easiest and cheapest option. Although, you could just send the .MOV files by email, and as long as the recipient has QuickTime Player they'll be able to view them.

Otherwise, select the .MOV file in RAD Tools and save/convert using the DivX5.1 Codec, this produces quit small .AVI files. Alternatively, use the Full Frame setting, which will produce large .AVI files (which could be deleted or burned after use).

If you do have Windows Moviemaker 2, you could string several clips together and save them as .WMV files (playable in Windows Media Player 9).

Good Luck!

A big thanks for all your help - I've had a whale of a time playing about with Moviemaker! I did download the RAD video tools for Windows, didn't understand them at all but followed your instructions (more or less - DivX5.1 codec didn't jump out at me, but I found another 5.1 something which converted into small .avi files). I've also created movies by stringing clips and photos - a lovely way of saving my daughter's graduation day.

It's a bit like walking in fog - can't recognise anything at all but when it's explained, the mists just clear. Well, become less dense, anyway. Have now sent on silly clips for fun and been inundated with "how do you" questions from others who have bought/been given similar cameras!

Pleased to learn you are enjoying using Movie Maker 2, I find it a great fun way to view photos with music added.

A more enjoyable (and comfortable) way to view them is by converting to VCD format, copy to CDR and play on a DVD player attached to the TV.

To convert there's a handy free program TMPGEnc. Download and instal from:
