lsass.exe system error
      #299437 - Mon Aug 14 2006 06:03 AM

Everytime I start my computer, I get this error:

"lsass.exe - System Error
When trying to update the password, this return status indicates that the
value provided as the current password is not correct"

It reboots automatically and gets the same error again.

The problem started with my brothers playing World of Warcraft. They restarted the comp and got this message:

"STOP: C0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file):\System Root\System32\Config\SECURITY or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable."

I couldn't even get into Safe mode and starting Windows using last known good configuration got me the same error so I checked around and microsoft recommended a system restore so that's what I did. Now I keep getting the lsass.exe error.

Should I just reinstall Windows completely?

as long as you remember to back all your files up that you still need and are quite happy with it then a windows reinstall is quite easily the best option

Is there anyway for me to backup the files even though I can't start Windows?

Before reinstalling completely, try a Repair Install

Ok. I tried the site's suggestions but when I checked for the password, they said I didn't have one so went ahead with the reinstall. Now I've got a couple new problems and I have no idea how to fix it.
- I can't change the screen resolution. it's stuck at 640 x 480 and 16 bit color quality.
- I went to device manager and there's a yellow question mark next to these guys: EpsonStylus C86, Ethernet Controller, Multimedia Audio Controller, PCI Modem, Video Controller (VGA Compatible).
- no internet.

Do I need to reinstall everything over? Would it be possible to do it without the cds?

What you need to do is install the motherboard drivers. These will be on either the CD that came with the motherboard or the CD that was supplied with the computer.

If you don't have any installation Cd's then go along to the motherboards manufacturers web site and download the relevant drivers.
