C drive died, trouble rebuilding system... HP help line is worthless!
      #298453 - Mon Aug 07 2006 08:33 PM

My c-drive died, overheated and simply quit. It took a while to figure out that my slave drive was what the system was trying to boot off of, but once we figured that out, I went and bought a new drive to be the master drive (slave is still unattached to make sure data isn't lost while trying to fix the current mess. It has all my work files on it.)

I have installed Windows using the (theoretical) rescue disk. However, it did not recognize several piece of hardware. I have been able to load drivers for the audio (now paying a music cd, yeah!) and the modem.

However, it seems that the machine is not talking to the ethernet card. I have no item called Network devices in my Device Manager folder (within the system properties). Under the Other Devices heading I have Ethernet Controller and SM Bus Controller with big yellow questios marks next to them .. obviously not working.

In talking with HP, they can't even tell me what kind of ethernet card is in there. (Presario 6020US) One guy said it lists "10/100 ethernet" on one page of his HP-for-idiots-manual" and it lists RJ-45 Ethernet on another, but he's not sure what I'm asking for ... he couldn't figure it out so he trasferred me to someone "who know about LANs and stuff" only to transfer me over to a high level tech wo deals with corporate level servers. He's clueless about my little PC and apologized but was honest that he was clueless as to were to even begin.

He tried to transfer me and I went back to the beginning and had a woman demand I pay more $$$ before proceeding, and when I asked to be put through to her supervisor, I was transerferred to a dummy line which rang for 45 minutes. I stubbornly held on, but finally gave up and went searching online for RJ-45 eternet drivers and found info on blade servers ... and I doubt that's what's in my little PC.

(deep breathe here) OKay ... my Linksys wireless router is plugged in and working -- I'm sending this via that router on my hubby's laptop. When I tried to instal the router onto the Presario, it coud not find that system's ISP. Their tech is the one who identified that I was missing the ethernet driver. Windows is installed and running fine. I even installed Norton's Internet Secutiry just to make sure that drive was workiing.

Help?! Should I just go get a new ethernet card and is it something that can be bought locally and does it matter which kind I get? ... it's bad enough that a bunch of my stuff is now lost on a burned out drive, but not being able to reload drivers from the official recovery CD is just beyond frustrating. And what does the SM Bus Controller control? (sigh)

My tech guru friend is on vacation and I am lost when it comes to this end of things. Can you hear me screaming in frustration from there?

Any help or pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance -- Jill

Hi Jill, to be honest you could try and track down the driver for your board but id be inclined to buy a new ethernet card.
They are very cheap and a doddle to fit it could save you many headaches in the long run.
I hope this helps.

If you don't want to put in a different card, as suggested above, download and run Everest

Run a report and copy and paste the results back here.

BTW Has this card been added by yourself? The recovery disk should take you back to when the PC was first built, including all hardware and drivers.

OK OK I can't go any faster! aaaaaaaaaaaagh!

No, I didn't install the card or the system, my hubby bought me the machine and it was all up and running when we plugged it in. The rescue/reinstall disk should have installed all the right drivers, which is why I gave Compaq-HP such grief. They supplied a disk that was/is unacceptable. And until I truely needed it, like now, I'd have no clue it was pretty worthless. I coud have just reloaded Windows from any of my disks, even from the rescue one that came from this laptop -- which I tried to use to instll the driver for the ethernet card. It's newer, I thought it'd haemore drivers on it. (no luck, obvioulsy)

I found a place called driverguide.com and was able to dl a utility that identified the hardware. One is an nVidia nForce Networing Adapter (ethernet) and the other is their SM Bus Controller. I was abe to dl drivers from nVidia. However, the ethernet driver still remains MIA, even though I've theoretically identified which device it is. NVidia's own installation software did not identify its own product.

I'll go to Everest next and do that, but I'm thinking that this ethernet card is going to be burned in effigy soon, just to make me feel better. (sigh)

Thanks .. be back soon.

I'm also leaning towards replacing it, and then there's that little voice in my head that says I shouldn't let the silly little beastie beat me (shrug).

I don't usually do this end of things-- I can make my software sing, dance and do cartwheels, but the hardware end ... I'm faking it 'til I fix it.

Do I have to worry about getting the wrong kind of card? I'm going to click the link you provided after I hit send, so perhaps I'm about to answer my own question. I'll post what I find when I find it.

Thanks for the help, Dad. (grin)

Hope I did this right .. I've never used this program before so I think I selected the right info to collect. This looks like it is longer than War & Peace. My apologies in advance for the length!

What model number is the computer. Model number and serial will allow us to find the motherboard drivers via the Compac Website.

Launch Everest.

On the left side, click on Network, then Report > Quick Report > Plain text.

Copy and paste all the text above the debug part.

Re: C drive died, trouble rebuilding system... HP help line is worthless! [Re: RichieP]

The machine is a Compaq Presario 6020US, Serial number: 3023kmz28815c.

I was literally looking into the machine trying to find the ethernet card, only to realize that the plug came in and right onto the big (mother?) board. This did not seem to bode well for me. Neither Compaq/HP nor nVidia (whose component this theoretically is) could identify the hardware or find an appropriate driver ... even after I supposedly identified it using DriverGuide.

Since this was becoming what appears to be a hopeless cause and was making me want to consume copious amounts of alcohol, I bought/installed a new ethernet card. And after swearing my way through the process of setting up the router, I am now able to get online. Now if only I could figure out how to install programs without their product keys which came via email and are now lost on the dead drive. (stupid human trick ... I never wrote them down or printed them out -- stupid me saved them into a file ON THE HARD DRIVE, and never thought to back THAT folder up onto a disk. Moron!) But I did print the sales receipts, so there is hope.

Okay ... since I do want to know just what the heck happened here, I ran Everst again. Under the Network choice I could pick 1) Windows Network or 2) PCI / PnP Network. I chose the Windows network option but there is "quick" option and the results were just as long as my first time through. I'm not posting it since I doubt it's what you need -- it looks to be a repeat of the last time.

Under the Windows choice it is identifying the new ethernet card which was just installed (Dynex DX-E101 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter rev.F1) (they didn't have any 10/100/100 in stock, so I got the 10/100 one). And it is giving me listings about that piece of hardware. Under the PIC/PnP option it is identifying two choices: nVidia (nVidia nForce MCP Networking Adapter) and another one (VIA VT6105M/LOM Rhine III 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet controller). When I choose either of those, there is no additional information given as there is when I highlight the working Dynex. (Not a good sign, huh?)

I ran Everest just on the nVidia choice under PIC/PnP and got another report. It is also rivaling War & Peace in length. Shall I post that? Is there a portion of it that is useful? Is any of it useful or is this like a dog chasing its tail -- no point at all except to make me think I might "catch" the solution, but will eventually fall down exhausted instead?

Please feel free to tell me you want to close this thread since I have solved my problem by installing a new ethernet card. While I am now able to rebuild my machine's program collection, I am still very curious about why an apparently built-in ethernet adapter has become semi-invisible. I'd love to know the answer to this, but don't want to waste your time.

Thanks for everything! As always, you guys are more helpful than any official help line I've ever tried!

Best -- Jill

This is still 3/4 of the generated reports ... lots and lots of info and I didn't want to load that much stuff onto here if it was mostly useless/extra info.

Thanks!
Jill

Hi Jill.

At least you're back online. If you really want to know, for curiosities sake, you need to click on the word Network, and do the Quick Report.

Look for a mention of Ethernet and highlight that bit. (You may have 2 now if you have a new card )
