OE Back-up
      #29844 - Fri Dec 19 2003 12:00 PM

I understand you can copy the store folder and save it on disk, I've tried this but when I copy the messages to a new folder and then change the folder pathway in OE to that new location all the messages disappear. Anyone know where I'm going wrong?

Joe

You have to create a folder, say "C:\My Mail", change the existing "Store Floder" to point to it, log off OE and it will be moved.

If you want backups of Inbox and Sent Items, go to the folder, right click and, in my case, point it to the Briefcase. I have other small files in the briefcase and every couple of days I copy the Briefcase to a memory pen.

I hope this helps.

Personally I use OEbackup to save ALL my OE settings, mail, and data

Hi Burr & Iain,

Thank you both for responding.

I've used Outlook rather than Outlook Express for a couple of years now because of it's user friendly backup add-on. I have it set to backup once a day and its very useful and easy to save to a removable disk and then import if I happen to do a clean install. I wanted to revert to OE because I can use the HTML and create the code directly myself just like a HTML editor. When I saw Burr's original post on this subject a little while back I thought I'd give it a try and see how it works.

I'm OK up to the point where I have to shut down OE so that it recognises the path to the location of the new folder but when I restart OE all the messages have gone. I've used DBxtract in the past but found it takes a rather slow. How does the new version compare with the old Iain and can you set it to backup automatically?

No great problem but I would like to just one e-mail programme instead of two if possible.

The reason probably because Outlook Express saves as pst files rather than as dbx as is the case for OE

I think I've got a little further, it takes a while but I get there in the end. I didn't realise that when you switch locations OE automatically switches the messages over for you at the same time. But what if you're doing a clean install say, how can you switch the messages back without losing them?

Joe

When you do a clean install the mail box location is the standard one (with the long path name) and the Inbox has 1 Microsoft message in it.

What you then need to do is change the location, then copy/import Inbox and Sent Items from your backup to the new location. Also, import/copy your address book in, set up preferences, signatures and the like.

Joe you could always try this

Go To Start | Run
Type in regedit

find the following key in the Left pane

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{Unique Identity}\Software\Microsoft\
Outlook Express\5.0

Edit the value called Store Root by double clicking it and setting it to equal the required path name, eg C:\Mail

Then move the mail and news folders from the old location to the new and restart Outlook Express., Don't forget to create a new folder where you want the mail to be saved, if you haven't already done so

Good Morning Burr,

I tried out your suggestion this morning and I'm pleased to report that it worked a treat. As I said it takes a while but I get there in the end. I'm playing around with this now as I know it will be very handy information to have during a future re-install. I'll give Iain's alternative method a go later today.

I would like to wish you and your family a very happy Christmas and new year and thank you for all the excellent help and guidance you have given me during the past year. Your help and that of all the other volunteers who give so much of their time and expertise helping others on this forum is really appreciated.

Good morning Iain,

Thank you very much for suggesting the alternative method. As I said to Burr above I'll give it a go later today and let you know how I make out.

Many thanks for now.

Hi Iain.

It also worked a treat, that was never in doubt though only my ability to put your instructions into effect. Thank you once again for your much appreciated help on this occasion and the many other occasions over this past year. I wish you a very happy Christmas and new year.

Merry Christmas and happy new year to you too Joe.

We shall all have a great new year as it will start with a speedier forum, remember the previous years when one had to click on stop otherwise the page took ages to load.
