Hello, welcome to the forums.
Right, put the xp disk in, turn on your computer and enter the BIOS. -As soon as you turn on your PC, Repeatedly tap: Del, F12, F1 or sometimes F8 (It could be any of these, different manufacturers use different keys, keep trying until you enter a new screen).
Now you need to change the boot order (This changes what the computer looks for to boot from first, usually it is the hard drive and then it loads windows). You will have to search the BIOS for 'this, (It will be called something like: 'Boot order') When you have found it, change the 1st one to the disk drive that you will have the xp disk in. Now save and exit the bios, (usually F10 or F12). The computer will now restart, and if done correctly it will either load straight from the xp disk or you will be asked to press a button to confirm the load from the disk.
You will now be in the xp setup, where it will give you instructions as to what to do from there. It could take up to an hour (depending on your PC) to install and you will need to stay with it as it will ask for confirmation for certain things every now and again.
Hope this helps

I am only talking from personal experience from the four or five times that I have had to reinstall xp.
You shouldn't need to do anything with the partitions in the BIOS, that is done during the xp setup and it gives you clear instructions. (Brief description of Partitions)

i want to kiss the ground you walk on
thankyou soooo much
i did it !!!!
the only thing i was a bit stuck on was that when i went to delete the c drive it already had a partition so i deleted the one that had data on and then thought id better make another partition before i installed windows back on ....which i did but i wasnt sure of the size .....it came up automaticly with a size (max i think ) so i left it at that
thanx again m8
and if you have any suggestions on the size it would be great for future ref
p.p.s we had a second hard disk in there 200gig but when it was last f-disked by a friend it went down to 128gig ???? ...when i was doing fdisk this one too had a partition ...could that be why ive lost 72 gig ?

You could have left it with just the one partition (C) but having 2 is no problem.
To check your second hard drive:
Right-click My Computer and select Manage.
Click Disk Management and the right-pane should show both your disks and the partitions.
You will be able to tell which is which because your main disk will be labelled Disk 0, the second Disk 1. You can format and change the partitions by right-clicking on the second disk and selecting format, and change drive letters etc.
You won't be able to do it on your main disk with Windows installed on it in there.

i have my two drives in there
disk 0 has no partition (must have done that wrong lmao )
and disk 1 has 2 ...1 says 128 ntfs healthy the other says 61.92 unallocated
another question (sorry) is it better to have the os on its own partition ?

It seems to be a personal preference. Some say yes, other that it doesn't matter.
At least you now know where the missing part of your 200GB hard drive has gone. Right-click the one that says unallocated and select Format.
If your computer keeps freezing after just reinstalling Windows, you may have a hardware problem.
Who put the extra hard drive in?

Have you installed Windows service pack and all of the available updates?
If not, go to Windows update and install service pack to and all available security downloads. This probably won't fix your problem, but the importance of doing it cannot be stressed enough!

Your friend obviously didn't format all the partitions correctly.

Every solution I can find to this error suggests reinstalling Windows
Not ideal seeing as you've just done it, but you could try a Repair Install

I get the same solutions as RichieP. A repair install doesn't take as long as it only installs system files, it doesn't wipe the disk, it only replace windows system files, although you will have to install all the updates again.
