System file scanning
      #297537 - Wed Aug 02 2006 06:06 PM

I have 2 laptops (1x Acer and 1x Toshiba) i am trying to scan the system files for any corruptions (in run cmd: sfc /scannow) the only trouble is you need a windows xp cd for any restorations and both these laptops only come with the manufacturers restore cd's, how do i repair these files then? i was wondering if because the xp versions are legit i could get ms to send me an xp cd and just say i lost the original?

You have absolutely no chance of MS sending you an installation disk.

If you're in luck, you'll have an I386 folder that contains a copy of installation files from the install CD. Have a look for it, it's usually at C:\I386 (note it's a capital i, not a 1). If not there, maybe inside the Windows folder.

If it's there, when SFC asks for the installation disk to replace files, point it at that folder.

If it's not, you're stuck, unless you know someone who has a full installation CD.

OK OK I can't go any faster! aaaaaaaaaaaagh!
