Protect XP from nasties
      #296930 - Sun Jul 30 2006 12:39 PM

Hi,

I've got XP SP2 on a PC I built from scratch. System works ok, even better now I've got a new Western Digtal 80GB HD. Anyway, to protect my PC from all the nasties out there on the net I use AVG, Adaware, Spybot, System Mechanic and the built in Firewall (please don't laugh too hard, I need to get a decent one I know)

What do you use, and what would you suggest to a person with limited funds to protect a PC using XP?

Thanks in advance.

Zone Alarm is a free firewall that does the job well.

You'll find everything you need in the following thread from the Security forum.

delta89 , by using Adaware , Spybot and AVG you're pretty well protected from spyware , malware and virus infection. As has been said a decent firewall is a priority and Zone Alarm (free) is one of the most popular ,and easiest to use.

You might also want to add.... Spywareblaster....an excellent free app which will run quietly in the background and prevent many of the nasties from getting on your pc.

If you use all these , and use the net sensibly ( avoid file sharing sites , adult sites etc etc ), and , keep all your security apps fully updated you shouldn't really have any problems.

If i did that i would only use my PC for 5 mins a day

Joking aside you could also add spyware guard to run alongside Spywareblaster - http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html

I'd add either or both ewido 4.0 and a-squared, you can get them via the link posted above by Jonny555.

Spyware Blaster pretty much locks your system up from alot of ad and spyware... consider using Agnitum Outpost free firewall, although many disagree, I have found it to be better than Zone Alarm in the sense that it uses up less resources, although zone alarm is a very very good firewall. You can download Outpost Firewall at http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpostfree/download.php

I agree with that. I think that SpywareBlaster plus SpywareGuard and my AV are the reasons that I've never had anything nasty on my PC. I don't visit dodgy sites either!
