Hi, Can anyone help me. I have been using windows XP home edition for several years. Today something really odd has happened.
When I fired up my PC everythinh has totally GONE. I had excel, word etc all on the desk top, had loads of music etc stored in various directories on my C drive. I go in now after just logging on and it is liked everything has been totally wiped off and instead I am left with mere default settings for windows XP.
Can anyone help. I have lost all my MP3 files everything. I have not changed a thing. THe pc took ages to log on and said it was settimng my personal settings. I cannot understand what has happened. Can anyone help me or have I been hijacked and someone wiped my pc clean.
Thanks
Kelvin

Try a System Restore to a time before this happened. If you have been using this OS for several years, you should be familiar with its workings.

I would guess that your Windows profile has become corrupted and XP has created a new one. Your stuff should all still be there but all the references to file locations etc. were in your old profile. Try the restore first but if that doesn't work you should be able to rebuild a new profile by searching for the current location of all your files.

Go into your My Documents folder and open a sub-folder, if in the address bar you see a dot followed by your PC's name after your account name then your old account was corrupted and a new one was created. For example:
C:\Documents and Settings\Dom.PCNAME\My Documents\...
If this is the case, navigate to the Documents and Settings folder and your old account folder should still be in there. You might be able to salvage your files from it.

That's quite right. Everything on my PC had to be reinstalled last year and all my stuff now says 'C:\Documents and Settings\Madeline.PCNAME\...' etc. The old stuff still exists, but it's been renamed to 'C:\Documents and Settings\Madeline_old' and obviously only goes up to the date of the reinstallation, but it's accessible.
Kelvin, go to Start>Run and type in 'C:\Documents and Settings' (without the quotes) and you should be able to find your old folder there. I've just tried it and it worked for me. Madeline.
