dial up-norton antivirus
      #295411 - Sun Jul 23 2006 10:34 AM

I have constantly been disconnected by my dial up connection, every 3 to 5 min in fact.
My Norton antivirus has expired and I decided not to pay for the continued upgrade, I now get an error message, on startup," Norton does not support the repair, uninstall and re- install". I hav not done this.
My connection to dial up is now never disconnected, could the Norton have been responsible for the trouble? should I get rid of the error message by uninstalling? I am reluctant to in case my troubles return.
Anyone had this experience please.

Its possible that Norton may have caused the problem, it must be out of date by now too. If you uninstall and reinstall it, you'll get a year's free updates. Everything on my PC had to be reinstalled last year, including Norton, and my subscription's now due for renewal 4 months later than it would otherwise have been! I hope you're not going on-line without any AV protection, that would be asking for trouble.

Thank you Madeline,
I have AVG. If Norton was the culprit then not sure if I should reinstall it, even if there is another 12 months free, I do not want that trouble again.

barbara1 , i would stick with AVG. If you haven't uninstalled Norton then it would be best to do so as it may cause problems.
Have you been running with AVG and Norton ? If you have this may be the root of your problem.

As has been said, running 2 AV programs simultaneously may have been the cause of your problem. You need only one AV program, having 2 or more can cause conflicts and give you less protection, not more. The same applies to firewalls, so if you happen to have 2 of those, get rid of one of them, especially if one of them's the XP firewall, other firewall's are better.
On the other hand, it's not the same with anti-spyware programs. You can have more than one of those without problems, in fact it's better to have several to make sure that most, if not all, nasty stuff is identified and removed.

Madeline,
Thank you for the info, My XP has the firewall disabled, if I try and enable it, it returns to disabled, I was told that Norton did this by default.

If I uninstall Norton can I enable the XP version? The Norton was the three months free version with a new computer, not sure I could reinstall it if I wanted to.
Also has AVG got a firewall or must I install one.

Thank you for the help.

barbara1 , what version of Norton are you running ? Is it Norton firewall , Norton Anti-virus or a combination.

The free version of AVG is an anti-virus only , so you would require a firewall to run alongside it. If you choose to uninstall Norton you could use the windows firewall , but there are more secure free firewalls available which will run nicely with AVG.
Let us know your thoughts if you need more help.

Since you can't enable the XP firewall, I assume you're using the Norton firewall as well as NAV. Norton Internet Security? Norton can be difficult to get rid of completely, so here are a couple of links that may come in useful.
Remove NAV. This is for NAV 2005, but it's probably the same for the 2004 and 2006 versions.
Remove NIS. There is a link on that page to a removal tool, if needed. Ignore the bits about reinstalling in both cases!
As for free firewalls, try ZoneAlarm or Sunbelt/Kerio. Both of these will turn off the XP firewall when installed. The Kerio firewall is the full version for 30 days, then reverts to the free version with less features (unless you pay of course). You can see the differences on the link I gave.
