Idiots :-(
      #2938 - Thu Jul 17 2003 02:50 PM

Can anyone tell me what those ***** at Microsoft think they're up to with Media Player 9?

Recently I had to "migrate my licences" twice in one day when I hadn't made any changes to the computer.

I've just tried playing a track copied from CD, and yet again it told me I had to "migrate" them again, but when I tried it said Sorry, we are unable to issue a license to you at this time. Please try later.

Music copyright isn't Micro$oft's concern, so what do they think gives them the right to decide which of my music tracks I can and can't play on my computer, and why the frequent need to "migrate" licences?

Also, why the refusal? I've bought the CDs, so why shouldn't I play then in any way I choose? I don't have a separate CD player, so who is Bill Gates to say whether or not I can play music on my computer? Has he taken over the music industry? Presumably he'll be buying the internet next.

Thank goodness I'm planning a reinstall later in the year, which will be my chance to ditch Media Player 9 and, from then on, play my music when I want to, without having to ask Bill Gates' permission each time and have the ***** refuse as he has done today.

Barney,

Turn off license acquisition, you don't need to have a license to play the music on your system.

Personally, I would start again. Delete the files, turn off license acquisition and recopy the tracks to your HDD

Don't worry, Burr. It is annoying, but I'll survive.

Thanks, Puta. I've already got licence aquisition turned off, but the tracks date from before I upgraded to version 9. Perhaps that's why it's playing up.

I'll try your suggestion over the next couple of weeks, deleting and recopying CDs.

Version 7 wasn't entirely "licence free" though. I remember I sometimes had to restore backed-up licences if I made significant changes, so does that mean I still need to back-up my licences even though I "don't need them"?

As you will have realised by now, I don't quite understand the licence situation.

Update for Iain. [Re: Barney_Rubble]
      #3437 - Thu Jul 24 2003 02:42 PM

Good news, Puta! It works!

I still get this "migration" rubbish on the older tracks that haven't been replaced yet, but all the newly copied stuff works perfectly. It does have to be properly deleted first though, via media player using the "delete files" option. It's no good just deleting the playlist or only deleting the files.

For anyone who doesn't know, I select the CD in Media Player, select the first track, then hold "Shift" while selecting the last track. This selects (highlights) them all. I then press the "Delete" key, select "Delete from Media Library and my computer" and start again, inserting the CD and copying it as before, after making sure licence acquisition is disabled in "Options".

Another successful experiment concerns a mislaid CD that I think I've loaned to someone (but keep it quiet - I don't want that nice Mr Gates coming round to beat me up again ). After going though the "migration" ritual yet again, I copied the tracks to a blank CD, making sure they were saved in the same order as on the original, and then, after deleting the tracks as above, I was able to copy them again as I would have done from the original disc.

Thanks again, Puta. You've saved me the expense of buying a big hammer.

Probably, and I think I've probably got a setup file somewhere, but I'm one of these "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" types, preferring to stick with what I know.

The problem's solved now anyway, thanks to Puta, and we can hope others in the same situation will have learned from my experience and the help I received, so some good will probably have come out of what, at the time, was an extremely annoying aspect of that nice Mr Gates' attempt to take over the world.

Thanks for the thought anyway, Sarge.
