You can try out Linux before installing it.Have a look at this thread started below by metalmickey. Madeline.

Thanks for that info Madeline. Having read through it all I think I'll stop with Mr Gates for a while. The problem is 'limited channel capacity' - 'My brain' that is, not the computer.

You're welcome. I might try Linux via that link one day when I've got a few hours to spare! Madeline.

The more robust Linux Distros, such as SUSE and Red Hat are relatively easy to use, but IMHO are not for beginners or those afraid to "explore"
Setting up can be relatively easy , certainly in the case of versions such as Freespire, which can be made to look very similar to Windows.
You will be able to download Freespire, through bittorrent

Have fun, I will admit that it isn't all singing and all dancing, but it will get you the feel that there is more to computing than just Windows

I hope you enjoy it! Although that site I linked to is a German site, I thought that you could try an English version as there's an 'English' tab you can click on. I haven't tried it myself as I think it would probably take too long to download on dial-up.

Good luck with it. I'll go for the easy option and just use my familiar XP!
