It can be done (very crudely) in Windows Movie maker which is included in XP (under Accessories in the start menu) . You import all the files you want to show and then in the option tab under tools lower the Picture duration time to the lowest setting. This however will only allow a maximum of 8 fps, you will have to find a better alternative if more is required, this is not very much, the minimum fps for the eye not to be able to detect change is about 25fps and TVs run at around 50fps so it won't be much like video, although with only 500 pictures your video would only last 10 seconds at that fps. How smooth do you want the video to be?

No it wouldn't play on a DVD player, I have done a bit of looking around and can't see any software that would fit your needs, I will continue my search over the weekend when I have a bit of time.

The video will only be 10-20 seconds long, is it really worth burning to DVD/CD?

I've just been checking out a link from another thread and came across PhotoToFilm

"PhotoToFilm (formerly PhotoToMovie) allows you to create a movie slideshow from your digital images. The program is easy to use, all you have to do is select the images to be included - the result is a basic slideshow with dynamic that can be converted to any video format that you have a codec installed for."

I tried it and this program seemed OK, one thing to be aware of though is that it is only a trial version, the full version is paid for software.

£4 odd isn't too much to ask if the software does the job and 'free' wasn't mentioned.

I haven't used this software simply because the software I already have does everything I will ever need.

The usuall framerate would be 25fps.

I use high end products because I do a lot of imagery and some video work. They are not cheap and it takes a while before they pay for themselves.

How exactly do you want this project to appear? Is it intended to appear as a movie or as a slide show on the DVD?

If you really want it to appear as a full motion movie then your going about it the hard way, in that you should be using a live capture program such as Captivate. Check out the demo example to see what it does, although you may not use it's full functionality. There are other programs that do this, Captivate is just an example. That said, a carefully crafted slide show can be made to be impressive.

I think this does show the need the careful planning when attempting projects like this. Basically if you want to animate anything, then planning is a must. It took me too long to learn that.
