      #288088 - Fri Jun 16 2006 01:19 AM

Can anyone advise me on any hardware that will speed up my system, I'm currently running dell 5150 2.8GH, 1GB but could do with a bit more zip, any help would be appreciated!

What do you use the pc for?

For a start you could double the RAM then if its for gaming get a better graphics card , depending on the motherboard you may be able to put a faster cpu in .

We need more details mate motherboard name number e.t.c.

You could add more ram though i run my PC with 1GB and its fine.
I think the biggest improvement you could make is to put a new graphics card in as its using Integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 (GMA950).

The problem is most new vid cards require power from the psu and your supply is only rated at 305W.
This may be up to the job but i don't think it will cut it to be honest.
You would probably be better off replacing the psu at the same time , its easy to do only 4 screws.
If you decide to go for a new psu do not buy the cheapest you can find they are unreliable go for a name brand like Antec.
I have just put one of these in my PC it had separate rails for the motherboard and CPU and a great reputation. http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/90615

To be honest i cant find any benchmarks on it but if its a few years old it will not be up to the job?

How long have you had it?

Can you do me a favour and run Everest and tell me what the name of your video card is?

nVidia do the 7 series which is the latest series out there, however there isn't a 7500.

Everest is in my sig, if you don't have it, download and install then run, click on display and then PCI / AGP and tell us the result you get in the main window, also provide a screen shot.

Download this http://www.overclockersclub.com/downloadcenter/download.php?action=file&id=14 run it and let me know the final score.

Don't worry its the 2001 version i am suggesting this so i can compare it to my results.

Read the review below mate it basically says the cards no good for gaming.
You will have to let us know how much you want to spend and then decide if you want to take the risk of not upgrading the psu when you upgrade the graphics card if thats what you decide to do.

Quote:

The 7300 LE is the latest addition to Nvidia's entry-level range. As it's essentially an under-clocked 7300 GS, its performance is too poor to recommend it as a gaming card. With its 450MHz core clock and 256MB of 333MHz memory, we saw unplayable frame rates even at 1,024 x 768 in both test games - 15fps in Call of Duty 2 and 13fps in Far Cry - and it isn't exactly overflowing with features either.

You could look at sticking in some more RAM to give you some extra boost. Are you a gamer? If not it doesn't matter how poor your graphics card performs. If you had a better card, you might've not been believed.

What you got to be careful with is ,upgrading a Dell machine.

Check the size (in terms of actual measurements) of the PSU before you go out and buy a new one, as they have a habit of changing the "normal" sizes of PSU's for some unknown reason.

You could also look at the XP Forum and check the stickies created by putasolutions as turning off unrequired services can help your system speed.

Pete,

What software utilities are you using to optimize performance?

You may wish to trial Tuneup Utilities 2006 and programmes such as Registry Mechanic if you dont already use them. Both are very good programmes that I also used on my Dell to keep it tip top.

If you have a spare slot just put a new 1GB stick in.

If your existing 1GB is made up of 2 sticks then you will need to get both 1GB sticks.

What are you upgrading the PC for is it for gaming?

If its not for running modern games you do not need 2 GB of ram you will just be wasting your money and you will not see any performance increase.

Mate do not waste your money you will not see any increase in performance , the only time you would need 2GB of ram was if you were using the PC for the most recent games or video editing e.t.c.

I only have 1GB of ram in my pc and i use it for gaming and its fine , you do not need more than 1 GB of ram save yourself some money.

You would probably be better off getting the fastest CPU the motherboard will take if it hasn't already got the fastest.

You would have to post the motherboard details mate.

If you don't know them download this install and run it it will tell you - http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
