Can't get my brain around this!
      #287699 - Wed Jun 14 2006 08:25 AM

I just can’t get my brain around this! When I had a dialup connection with the Net, I had three different dialup accounts. Now I have broadband, I just have the single account. I gather I would have to use my regular telephone line if I want a second ISP, which will be a dialup. Yes?

Now, Mary has a computer, but she doesn’t have an internet connection. She wants a Pay As You Go account. I am going online with my setup to find the best deal for her. Instead of waiting for a CD from the chosen provider for her installation, can I connect her computer to my connection to the Internet to setup her account, I guess I’ll have to use my regular telephone line. She has the same area code as me.

I hope I have made myself clear!!!

I have done this with Tiscali ( probably others are the same ), first you run your software onto Mary's PC and connect to the net, Then you open a payg account with Tiscali using all of Mary's details, Download the software to Mary's machine , Then she should be up and surfing on payg , then you remove the details of your Isp from her PC, I hope this helps, Alan.

When I signed up with a 2nd ISP recently, I did it by phone. Once they'd got all my details, they gave me the dial-up number and I was able to set up the account myself without needing a CD. This wasn't for a PAYG account, but I think the same would apply. If you can ring the chosen ISP, you should be able to get the appropriate number and do the same for your friend. Go to Control Panel>Network Connections, click on 'Create a new connection' and the Wizard will take you through it. It's very easy to do, I also set up a couple of temporary PAYG connections on here a few months ago.

Thanks for your advice, certainly useful. Any ideas about the best ISP to start PAYG, with a subsequent upgrade to the same ISP's broadband service? Mary insists that she must walk before she runs!

Hi Rosie, I'm glad Mary's getting sorted, again I'd go with Tiscali for payg, and they have some good deals on BB on a regular basis, I've found them to be very helpful over the 4 years I've been with them, and upgrading to BB would then only be a couple of clicks of the mouse, Alan

If you would like a dial up connection that doesn't need any contract or anything else come to that, have a look at this.

I was under the impression that no PAYG dial-up involved any kind of contract, is that wrong? All I had to do with the 2 I had briefly was get the 0845 numbers, set up the connections and pay up when the phone bill came in!

Thats correct Madelaine, Rosie asks our thoughts on an ISP that would be an easy transition from payg to broadband after her friend has gained confidence, As I have just upgraded to BB, I found it very easy to upgrade as it was literally 2 or 3 clicks of mousey, Alan.

True, I don't know how easy it would have been to upgrade from my temporary PAYG connections.

I hope it's as easy for me when the glorious day arrives when I can get BB!

I can't get MY brain around why anybody would want to subscribe to more than 1 ISP anyway? Mind you it has to be said that at 50yrs old I'm a bit slow to catch on these days - what's the advantage of more than one? Steve.

You're a mere youngster, Steve! I had 2 PAYG accounts very briefly when we were having connection problems to see if one was better than the other. It wasn't, the problem was something else entirely. I like BT Yahoo! (my ISP), even though I don't like their software and their "support" is rubbish.

Does Mary live in the same house as you?

If she does it would be cheaper to buy a router and share your broadband connection.

I get the impression that she doesn't. Judging by Rosie's 2nd post on this thread, I think she'd got it sorted apart from selecting which ISP to go with.
