Hey,
I have a sony vaio FS285E and plan on upgrading the RAM from 512MB to 1GB. I have two questions:
1) Will it noticeably improve general computer speed? 2) Can I remove both sticks of RAM and just put in 1GB in one slot, or do I have to buy two sticks of 512MB?
Thanks.

You certainly should notice a general improvement in computer speed, in particular multi tasking. You should be able to have several applications running at one time and your system should handle the load reasonably well.
However, purse strings allowing, I would upgrade to the full amount your Motherboard allows which is 2GB, and install 2 sticks of 1GB. If that is out of the question, I'd be looking at buying 1GB and leaving one of your original 256MB sticks in to complement your newly acquired 1GB.

I would agree with Fusion, if you can get 2gb of RAM, this will make your laptop run like a dream! I have 2gb in my PC and its great.
Get the max that you can afford.

Hey,
I think the maximum RAM my laptop can take is 1024MB, not 2GB. Im basically looking to have a super-fast computer, 1024MB will make this happen?
Thanks.

Apologies for wrong max RAM. 1GB appears to be your limit. You could remove both sticks of existing RAM and install the one stick of 1GB. This however may be more expensive than 2 sticks of 512.
Please don't think that installing extra RAM will in your words make it a super-fast computer. . . . . if only!

So upgrading from 504MB to 1024MB will allow me to switch faster and more efficently from programs such as Word, Limewire, iTunes? Because they're basically the biggest programs I use on my laptop.
Thanks.

Just to clarify if your not sure why your 512 is suddenly 504, your graphics card is sharing your RAM allocation and for future reference is not preferred. Look for a system or rather a graphics card that has its own memory.
Logically twice the memory can only help your system. As above, multi tasking should be better.
Your 1024MB will only be 1016MB with the shared memory though.

So if I upgrade to 1024MB, my graphics card wont share my RAM, which is a good thing right? Basically I'll have this laptop for a few years more, especially when I begin work after university I know I'll be needing to use multiple programs.
I guess what I want to know is whether buying extra RAM will benefit me ultimately in the long term and be better for my PC. If so, I'll just go ahead and buy the two sticks of 512MB.
Thanks again.

NO. Your particular system will always share RAM. Your system is built that way. What I meant by future reference was buy a system that has independent RAM for graphics card and its own for system RAM.
Extra RAM will always benefit you in the long and short term. Purchase the RAM and pop back and tell us how you get on.

The extra RAM will make a noticeable difference and it is relatively cheap.
On an entirely different note, you mentioned that you use Limewire, If you want a working laptop to feel the benefit of the shiny new RAM I would advise against using Limewire as would most people here, it is riddled with spyware/viruses and other nasty things.

Hey,
Iv'e installed two sticks of 512MB RAM and it all seems to be fine. But now it says theres only 0.99GB of RAM - isn't there now supposed to be 1024MB of RAM?

This is more than likely a case of your video card using the remaining RAM on the PC.

It's all down to the way bits and bytes get calculated and the fact that your graphics card is sharing some of your RAM. As Fusion said earlier on in this link, you won't see the complete 1024 MB of RAM.
