USB Blues !
      #283532 - Fri May 26 2006 03:21 PM

Hi chaps,
I was chatting to my sister in Canada and was using my ANC webcam into a USB port (as usual). The cam fell off the desk and by the time I put back I had a balloon on the desktop that this equipment had malfunctioned. If I remove it and plug it back in it a balloon says 'USB device unrecognised - and that it has malfunctioned'!
I decided to re-install the drivers - but because the onboard CD is knackered I used my external drive - except that when I plugged it in I got the same balloon saying 'USB device unrecognised' (despite frequent use before!) I also have an external back-up hard drive - same problem now.
It seems that anything that I plug into my USB ports is now unrecognised (except my mouse strangely - which works in any of the 3 USB ports).
I went to Device Manager and unistalled all the USB kit (or drivers); rebooted and then plugged the kit in again - no difference. Now I'm stuck!
The comp is a Cybercom Laptop with XP Pro, 40gb drive, 2.4ghz Pentium 4 processor, and around 512mb ram - and it's rubbish!
I loaded the 'faulty' cam onto my desktop and it works fine.
Is it a wheelie bin job?

Part two!
I've just discovered that the ports won't recognise my wireless receiver - now I'm back on a LAN cable!
Help

Not sure if anything here will help.

If not, all is not lost. Get yourself a USB PCI card for a few quid here

Unfortunately nothing to help on your link Richie.
A card would be a great solution - but there's no slot! I just can't see how to install one.

No spare PCI slots? Nothing you can install a different way?

It's a laptop mate - and I don't fancy taking it apart!

Believe it or not there isn't as slot in the casing! The LAN card is built-in and there are 3 USB ports - together with the usual serial, video and parallel ports. On the side are the audio jacks and an infra-red port.
Methinks I'm stuffed!

It's virtually unheard of to have a laptop without a PCMCIA slot. Can you give us make and model please.

It's a Cybercom Professional Notebook with a 2.4 ghz Pentium 4 and 480mb ram. OS is XP Pro with all the updates.
There definitely isn't a slot in the casing (or a cleverly disguised cover!) There's also no 'hatches' on the underside except the battery housing.

Unfortunately I can't find a description of that anywhere on the net. Was it built by Medion? Have you got a more precise description like a model number for example?

Greysts - it's a Cybercom 5958 model No FID2030 Notebook PC.
Someone did say once that it was a special edition (badged Cybercom) by one of London's Department Stores.

Two things - there is a Meion sticker on the bottom with the XP Product Key on it. No other reference to them.
I've been trying other usb stuff in the ports - my mouse and an old webcam work ok - but my wireless receiver, digital camera, mobile phone and external drive don't (all result in a 'malfunctioned' message). Is it a power thing?

I can't track this down anywhere. The closest I got was that your laptop has a Microstar motherboard (that's the FID20230 bit). The only thing I can suggest it buy a powered USB hub and see if your peripherals will work through that.

Good thinking Greysts.
Ard Electronics do very cheap ones (in their 'sale' which seems to have been going on since they started!) They also sell series to usb & parallel to usb converters. Are these any good?

I've never been a lover of adaptors for USB ports. The trouble with USB is that it tries to be 'all things to all men'. Most of the conversion work takes place in software and is prone to bugs and breakdowns. Parallel and serial ports were designed for specific purposes and trying to make them work like USB ports seems to me to be asking for trouble.

But that's just me. If they aren't to expensive it's worth a try.

Actually you're dead right Greysts - I misread (well ok - misunderstood) the hype in the cable spec - they merely allow usb devices to be used by other ports and don't convert the ports to usb at all!
I did some digging in Safe Mode within the system info.
The laptop is a Medion M785 X6 based pc
Bios - Medion Notebook Bios M7850100 22/10/02
Processor - X86 Family 15 model, 2 stepping, Intel 2,390mhz

I'm getting pretty desperate about this problem - so desperate I'm thinking of digging out my old Dell!

Download SIW from here and let's get some more info about this laptop. No need to run it in safe mode as we get more details in normal mode. Let's see what that tells us about hardware.

Info as requested - it's VERY long! It's the whole of the Hardware Section.
Two more bits of info (which may or may not be important) :
The inbuilt CD player does not work (it makes a quiet graunching noise if a CD is inserted but fails to speed up). It is detected by the system tho. This isn't a problem because I have an external unit - connected through the (non-working) usb ports!
The sound card only works very occaissionally - and is very distorted and crackly. Not a problem as I don't use it anyway.

And no - I haven't dropped the laptop!
