Could some wise muso please explain to me why my MP3 player earphones are marked left and right? I'm sure there must be an obvious reason; but does it matter that they go in specific ears?

I think it is just so you hear the stereo music as the artist intended. Sometimes you will only get sound form one side and not the other.

It's because that's the ears in which you should place the earphones. Music or Audio will be written and certain parts will be specific for the left channel or the right. Like for example when you watch a movie either at the cinema or home surround certain parts will go through the left speaker channel (i.e. when a character goes off screen towards the left) then maybe via the rear right channel when a tie fighter comes in from behind to attack the Rebellion [/nerd].
If you don't align your speakers into the correct position then you will not benifit from what the director required. Same with your earphones, if you don't put them in the correct ear then you're not going to benefit from what the producer wanted you to hear.
Hope that makes sense and doesn't confuse.

On most headphones, the little speaker does not cover the whole ear-bud, the rest is to the workings. If you put them in the incorrect ears then the sound isn't being played directly into your ears, therefor the sound quality is bad and it will be very quiet. Also, if you have them in the wrong ears any length of time, it starts to hurt your ears with most headphones as they are specially designed to go in a certain ear.
So, not only is it for the reasons already pointed out, it is also for practical and comfort reasons.

No problem. Being stuck on a bus for 2 hours a day and then being at college in between where all that is played is the crappy hardcore CHAV music i listen to my mp3 player about 4-5 hours a day so I have become very well acquainted with my headphones!!! If you are looking for a pair of decent headphones, I would highly recommended these, a high price but very high quality to go with it!!!

Thanks for the link Josh. I'm not such a heavy-user as you and I've no gripe with the sound-quality of those supplied with it. It's a Sanyo combined MP3 and DABradio (dead stylish in creamy-white with rounded corners). It was a 70th birthday prezzie from my children, so I treasure it !

Talking of mp3 players I got myself a Zen Vision : M a couple of weeks ago and use these headphones with it as the ones that come with it are crap. So far I've been extremely impressed with the player: really good sound quality and a great screen for watching videos.
