Hi - I'm running XP SP2 and download updates regularly. However, the "Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)" won't install. It just says "Updates were unable to be successfully installed".
When I check my update history its says that "Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474)" was successfully installed on 22-May-06.
Any ideas ? I've a feeling I won't be able to take any updates.....

I wouldn't worry too much about this. As you were able to install the Windows Genuine Advantage Notification update, things are probably OK for you. Wait until the 2nd Tuesday in June (13th) when Microsoft issue critical/security updates and if you're unable to get the updates then, let us know. Madeline.

Don't know if this is related..... When I run Disk Defragmenter and click on "Analyse" or "Defragment", the button goes down, but doesn't do anything - I can't defrag my disks.....

I don't know, possibly. Have you run AV and anti-spyware scans to see if there's any malware on your PC? There's obviously something not right somewhere. Some things you could try: 1. Make sure that you haven't got any other programs running when you try to defrag. 2. Temporarily disable your AV progam and see if you can defrag then (don't forget to re-enable it). 3. Try running Disk Defragmenter wih your PC in Safe Mode If none of these works and your scans show no serious malware, the only thing I can suggest is that you go to the Hijack This logs forum, read Andrew's post near the top and post a log there for analysis.
Madeline.

RJL , when you are trying to update from the windows update site are you choosing the express method to get the updates. If so , try the custom method and see if that will allow you to install individual updates.

Hi I use custom. The updates are downloaded onto my PC, but won't install. My Windows XP is a genuine Microsoft product.

Like you said in your first post Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)" won't install and this seems to be the reason why you can't install the latest updates. I have no reason to disbelieve you when you say your copy of windows is genuine but have a look.. here ...as it describes the purpose of Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)" and Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474.
There has been cases of genuine copies of windows being flagged as pirate ones and if i were you i would check... here ...first and see what it comes back with..

Hi Thanks for the advice. My version of XP is legitimate. It came pre-installed from a reputable dealer and I ran the tests you suggested.
Strange thing is that all the updates have now installed !!!!! My daughter was using the PC and when she powered it down it offered her the option to install them - so she did.
I've checked via Add/Remove programs and Microsoft update and they're all installed. I've tried to install the optional "Update for Windows XP (KB904942)", but this failed in the same way as the others did.
Most confusing......

Try downloading it from.... here...Yet again you are required to validate windows but then hopefully you'll be successful.
