The problem is that it takes 7-8 clicks on the close button before i can close. It tries to close but bounces back again and as I said it takes 7-8 clicks before it finally closes. the OS is Windows98 SE.

On the dial up box, have you un-checked the connect automatically box?

Two things come to mind:
1. Have you been tinkering around with your programs, in their options? Perhaps you set something to check for updates automatically at startup? Some will try to dial out if the connection isn't already there.

2. Could also be you got some spyware landed on the computer, maybe from a web page? Try a spyware scan with adaware, available free from www.lavasoftusa.com - spyware is a small program tries phoning home, which is one thing can force a dialup attempt so persistently.

Thank you Nirvana and Safetserfa for a prompt reply to my cry for help. This morning I switched the pc on and everything was working ok, the dial up box only came on when I connected to the Internet. Don't know how it happened, it must be
one of the mistery of technology.
Again many thanks
