Hi! Can someone please help me around these winxp updates. When i try to download them from the microsoft update site it connects ok and i`ve installed activex but when i try to download them, for example, when i click on express my computer freezes and the internet explorer is not responding. Its not my firewall or anything like that i think. I dont know what it could be? I hope for some answers. thanks!

I would recommend letting your PC update its self, you can turn on Automatic Updates in: Control Panel -> Automatic Updates.
You can change the settings so the PC downloads and updates automaticaly or you could choose (like me), to get it to inform you of when updates are available and then choose which updates to download and install.
Hope this helps.

Have you got either SP1 or SP2 installed on XP? If you haven't got either of these service packs, you can't get security updates. Madeline.

Try turning off your firewall just long enough to try the updates as i had a problem like this a while ago. If i needed to update my pc i had to disable NIS2003 to get them. I think its unlikely that this is happening to you but its worth a try. Also, have you done the usual spyware and virus scans? You could try cleaning your browser too. Ad-Aware Spybot seach and destroy Spywareblaster
Panda Active Virus Scan
CCleaner Try all of these if you havent already and see if they help. The_DADDY

I've never had that trouble with NIS 2003. If the Norton firewall is disabled in an attempt to get these updates, it would be a good idea to turn on the XP firewall before going on-line and change it back later. Madeline.

I suppose I'm lucky never to have had a problem with NIS 2003. The thought of going on-line without any kind of firewall, even for a few minutes, makes me shudder and brings on my paranoia! Madeline.

Thanks guys for all the tips. I have tried them already, but its no use. And i have service pack 2. But my automatic updates work so i guess im ok. Its just that they update once a month or two. I hope that`s ok.

Well, if you're getting updates automatically, you don't need to worry too much about being unable to get them from the MS site. It sounds as if you're getting all the updates you should have. MS issues updates monthly on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. You'll always get at least one - the Malicious Software Removal Tool. If it finds nothing, you won't be aware that it's there unless you noticed the icon in the Notification Area while it was downloading. Out of interest, what happens if you go to the MS Update site and click on "Custom" instead of "Express"? I'll understand if you don't want to try this and risk your PC freezing again! Madeline.

Neither do I, but at least you'll get all your critical/security updates with your PC set to receive them automatically. Madeline.

Something's just occurred to me. You said you're using Microsoft Update. Have you tried Windows Update instead? In IE, go to Tools>Windows Update and see if that works. Madeline.

Hi David. I am having EXACTLY the same problem you are! What sort of gear are you using? I'm using an AMD 3800 X2 (dual core) with Foxconn motherboard, 1GB DDR 400 RAM and 120GB SATA II HDD. The system was working ok yesterday, but when I tried doing the updates today - SPLAT! I've tried "uninstalling" the Microsoft Update and going back to the standard Windows Update, but that doesn't work. It's only when I hit either the Express or Custom buttons that the machine just locks up (after about 10-20 seconds) requiring a soft-restart. I've worked with computers for 20 years and run my own computer reselling / maintenance business, and I've NEVER seen anything like this before! As with you, I can download the updates using the auto-update feature, but that's no good if I want to check the "optional" updates, plus it's a sign that the system is "broken" in some fashion.
Com'on people - there must be some uber-geek out there who has the solution!

I can't think of anything else to try, but automatic updates are better than nothing. It's the optional ones that you might not be able to get that are a bit of a worry. Madeline.

Further to my initial post, I have made some headway. After a 15 minute wait on the Microsoft tech help line, and a fruitless 15 min conversation, I decided to try uninstalling everything except the system: which I did (good thing I hadn't got too far my install in the first place...). Anyway, after I uninstalled the video driver, the problem went away - isn't that interesting? I'm now going to spend time trying different versions of the nVidia drivers to see which one will work with my 6600GT card. I will post results.
P.S. The motherboard is a Foxconn NF4UK8AA - I downloaded the nForce 6.33 drivers from the Foxconn website and used those for everything except video, in place of the 6.29 drivers that came on the motherboard install CD.

Good luck with it, it'll be interesting to know how you get on. Madeline.
