SWF Files
      #26899 - Thu Dec 04 2003 03:04 PM

Hi all,

What are SWF files? Are they smaller than MP3?

How can i convert my music to SWF files as i have been told it's better for putting on the web!

I am using Win ME, dreamweaver, nero 5.5.

I will have a variety of music file types to convert - wav, mp3 and cda.

Thanks

SWF file are macromedia flash files,
I can't see how they would be smaller than any music file as they are usually a combination of music and graphics in an animated form

Agreed, and it isn't better, since SWF files rely on the visitor allowing the Flash engine in the browser to run. While most will not notice, others (like myself) get an ActiveX/plugin security alert every time it tries loading, and will normally deny access unless we know and trust the site.

To do it anyway, you don't convert, you create. That means having Flash or a Flash-engine'd software, then importing your music as wave or MP3 files. Are you sure they told you SWF, and not WMA? WMA files are Windows Media Audio, and have a better compression ratio even than MP3, creating a smaller file. Problem there, though, is it then relies on the Windows Media Player browser plugin being allowed to run, and that means users who don't use it, or aren't running Windows, will lose out.

Thanks all. Thought it was all a little strange but everything clear again.
