My father in law has a Celeron 700mhz system which contained a Rockwell HSF modem (Must be about 8 years old now), salvaged from an earlier 233mhz system. I recently updated the OS to Windows XP, but this stopped the modem from working and I had to download drivers from Conexant.com, which makes the modem work and it will connect to the internet, but the modem speaker won't switch off now and the constant noise is excruciating. I have tried going into properties and turning the speaker off, but this makes no difference. Any suggestions would be appreciated before I give up and buy a new modem!

You could open the base unit and remove the speaker wire from the motherboard connector.
This would probably mean you don't hear the beep as the PC turns on but if its working fine then its not a problem.
If its like mine its just a small speaker like you would find in a personal radio. Just trace the wires back to the motherboard, touch a bare water pipe before touching the motherboard to get rid of any static electricity, make sure the PC is unplugged from the mains.

I've already tried that with no success. The modem has a built in speaker! - Disconnecting the computer speakers made absolutely no difference. The modem speaker is part of the card so I can't disconnect that.

Depending on the type of speaker it is, you could try stuffing some blue-tack over it. That should muffle out the sound considerably (serously, try it)

Maybe in future you could give us ALL the facts , if you had said the modem has its own speaker i could have saved myself the hassle of replying:p

I'm really sorry if the tongue offended, it certainly wasn't aimed at you, I simply put it in to express my exasperation at the modem speaker.

Yes, I might try GMAC's blutack idea then give up and go shopping!

Let me know how my brainwave works. I got the idea from the mod i made for my graphics card. Basically, I took an 80mm fan, put 4 screws into it, then coated the screws in blutack. This new fan was then rested on my cards heatsink (which was getting toasty) Besides, the blutack is insulative, so short circuits aren't a risk

Have you tried turning the modem speak off or too very low by this method? Control Panel > Phone and Modem Options > Modem > Speaker volume > OK

Yes, have already tried that, doesn't make the slightest difference.
