Hello everyone,
I really need some advice as I'm a complete novice in this area.
As part of my job, I need to access the web and email from wherever I go, so really I need a new mobile which is capable of this. I have a notebook which I carry with me daily, and it would be great if the new mobile could give web access to the notebook. Here I'm thinking of a dial up access bridged via wifi or bluetooth? Not even sure if this exists or is available!
Also while out and about, I would like to read and reply to my emails directly from my phone (I leave the notebook at work / home sometimes).
My current phone only just manages text messages, I have no idea of the model, but it is a Nokia on Virgin. I'd love to stay with Virgin if possible.
I normally keep up to date with technology, but the mobile world seems to have left me behind.
The main problems I have are: I want to keep costs low - I don't mind spending cash if its worth it, and I'd prefer to hand over extra cash initally if it keeps running costs down. I don't want to buy something which is already dated. I'd love to sell this new device in a year or so, to buy a new model - so I keep up to date and prevent the mobile world passing me by again!
Does anybody have any suggestions? Do any of you use a mobile for the same purposes? Any help, knowledge, advice or suggestions would be really appreciated.

First step is to identify what outputs are available on your notebook. Does it have any of the following ports; InfraRed, Bluetooth, Firewire, COM or a PCMCIA slot?

Do you know that we're all in line for succession to the throne? Really?
Well, if forty-eight million, two hundred thousand, seven hundred and one people died I'd be Queen.

Thanks Greysts,
It has buttons to enable/disable bluetooth and wifi, but the bluetooth button just displays "No Bluetooth Device", so I assume I can add bluetooth easily? I have set up the WiFi and use it occasionally at home (although I prefer ethernet whenever possible as it never drops out).
I believe it has infrared and a PCMCIA slot but no COM or Firewire.

The 'No Bluetooth Device' simply means that you haven't got a Bluetooth device within range of the PC and even if you have it hasn't been paired with the PC.
Next step is to get a Bluetooth enabled mobile phone that you can use as a modem for your dial-up connection. You now need to consider the speed and cost of your internet connection. A normal standard mobile phone connects at 9.6kb which is very slow but probably good enough for transferring emails. The fastest connection is 3G (Third Generation) which should give you around 30 to 40kb. Obviously that will cost you more. You will also need to check if 3G is available in those parts of the country where you are travelling.

Hi,
I'm using an Siemens S65 and a bluetooth enabled ACER laptop for net access anywhere. It works, mostly.
It claims to be 115kbps and sometimes it is quite quick. I have set up outllook on the laptop so I can send and recieve email on the laptop via the S65 but I had to create additional outlook accounts to use the GPRS providers SMTP server. I couldn't send emails otherwise but could receive them using my existing pop server.
I'm currently sat in hospital bed while typing this. Net access this way has saved me from severe boredom
Most websites seem friendly to this sort of connection but others do not. On a few sites I get a 'temproary nework error'.
Webuser falls in between. I can view and send posts but the pages do not display properly. I get a lot of code displayed on the RHS
Also, you may find that your GPRS provider will give you the option to recieve web pages slightly compressed and reduced in quality to speed downloads up a little.

Do you only travel within the UK, or do you travel abroad as well? This will make quite a difference to the best way of connecting to the 'net, since you will have to pay roaming charges if you use your mobile/datacard abroad.

Dunno about phones , but I use a datacard for GPRS/3G via Vodafone , on an Acer Aspire 1690 , I also spent £20 on an additional antenna for it. I have not yet been unable to get a GPRS signal tho 3G is still limited.

I don't think we're going to hear from the original poster, or are we? PM me or another mod if you require it unlocking and to continue with the thread.
