I have a new Dell 5150 3.2 Running XP home. A dial up connection through Breathe ISP. I get disconnected every two to three minutes, the connection is never more then 25 kbs, and even drops as low as 9kbs. I have had a gain put on the line twice by BT, it has made no difference. I do not go on line enough to subscribe to broadband, any suggestions please?

Hi Barbara
I'm afraid everything on dial-up hangs on the quality of the t/p line. That includes distance from the exchange, electronic 'noise' on the line and physical connections. Simply bumping up the gain isn't enough on it's own to get you a better connection.
Let's start with the distance from the exchange. Obviously there is nothing you can do about that but how far, roughly, are you from the exchange? One measure might be to click on this link and put your own t/p number to the BB availability check. If it tells you that you can olny get 512 and even then an engineer visit might be needed that tells you you're a long way from the exchange.
Next get BT to do a noise check and see what happens.
Finally if you can get to it have a look at the condtion of the connection of the external BT wires. Thse can quite often get water in them causing the connetions to rust.

Another thing to do is get BT to check that there is no kind of fault on your line. Don't be fobbed off with that quick test they do for a few seconds over the phone, it doesn't necessarily show up a fault. We had similar disconnection problems to you a few months ago and it turned out, when they did a physical check on our line, that there was a fault, which they repaired. Unfortunately, in our case, it didn't solve the problem, it was something else entirely which won't apply in your case with a new PC. Madeline.

Thanks to you and Madeline for the answers. I have a second (slower) computer and it is never dis-connected, using the same ISP,so I assumed it was a problem with my new computer, perhaps a bug of some sort, I can't understand why the connection speed varies so much. Unfortunately I can not stay on line long enough to download some of the free spy, and mal-ware programmes. I have Norton security on the comp, perhaps this is not enough.

Since it's a new computer, maybe it's a problem with the modem. Can you take it back to where you bought it from and have it checked out? If not, perhaps you could contact Dell about it. Madeline.

Thanks Madeline, The computer was fine for the first week or so, which makes me think it is something I have picked up. It has only disconnected once so far today , so I will try and download a system scan programme. Thanks.

You're welcome. You are using a firewall and an anti-virus program I expect? Also, what about anti-spyware programs? Madeline.

Madeline, It took me four hours to download Spybot search and Destroy, because I kept getting disconnected, luckily I could continue where I left off when re- connected. I had 8 cookies, which I have got rid of, no improvement. No such luck with AD-aware, it requires a start at the beginning again every time I am disconnected, so I have given up, also the connection was as slow as 4kbs per second. It has taken four re-connections to send this reply to you, I am getting so frustrated! Still not solved the problem.

I really think you should contact Dell. Since your other computer has no problems, it looks as if it must be a problem with the new one. I know how you must be feeling after the similar problem I had last year. Madeline.

this might sound mad but when i was on dial up and the xp desktop clean up wizard showed up and i ran it i noticed that my speed increased.
and dont worry it just puts any icons it moves into a folder so you can get into it at any time.
but to be honest at this stage you can get a broadband connection for the same price as an old dial up one now so maybe its time to think about BB ?.
if you are not online that much you will prob find an even cheaper package that limits your speed and downloads.

I think about it frequently, but BT say I can't have BB! I'm too far from the exchange apparently.
