Hi, I have a problem with trying to get onto the internet.... My old computer works fine - it ran on W98SE. I have bought a new computer with an Agere modem running on XP and although I have set it up as per the old one (dial up phone number/user name etc) when try to dial in I get a "no dial tone" error. I get the same error with two other XP machines I have borrowed. All three work on another phone line, so any ideas what can be amiss?

I am not used to windows 98 but in control pnel there should be a icon that says modem if you double click that then clickthe modem tabhighlight your modem and click properties at the bottom and click the modem tab and remove the tick from the box where it says wait for dial tone before dialingand click OK
If that doesn't work look here it could be the wrong modem or no modem is listed

Hi wildthing, Thanks for your thoughts, but I think we may be a bit at cross purposes. The Win98SE system is my old defunct system and it worked. The new system is under XP control and it is this that won't work. I can find a "wait for dial tone" checkbox in the XP setup too and it is checked - but surely if it isn't my modem can't dial to the ISP's server? But I will try it!

I too am having difficulty understanding your problem but let me restate it and see if you agree. You had a PC with Windows 98se and a dial up modem which I assume was a separate box, yes? You clicked the icon for the connection, it rang and connected.
You've since got a new XP PC with an integral modem, set it up the same way as your old one and you get a 'No dial tone' message.
First thing to do is to plug a normal telephone into the BT socket you are using for the modem and listen to the dial tone. Can you hear one and is it the normal one? Make sure it's not the 'Call diversion' tone or anything like that because if it is, XP will not make the connection unless you tell it not to wait for a dial tone.
With the t/p still plugged in, dial the telephone number that you have for your ISPs servers. You should hear a couple of rings and then the bells and whistles to indicate a successful connection.
If that bit's OK, go back to your modem setup in Control Panel and turn up the volume so that you can hear what's going on during the dial up process. Reconnect the modem and try again.

You have it near enough. The old machine had a built in modem. I have tried a telephone - everything seems OK with the dialling tone and it certainly works as a telephone line. I have tried two other computers (a desktop and a friend's laptop) on the same line with the same "no dial tone" negative result! (unfortunately I am not able to connect so I'm at adifferent address and telephone line to even write this - on one of the other computers that doesn't work on the line in question! so it takes me a while to try things out) I hope to try the modem on "no wait for dial tone " shortly.

Make sure you are using the correct cable from your computer modem to the telephone socket , i have found that all recent modems use a cable with just two copper connectors on it , i have made the mistake in the past of trying to use a cable that has 4 copper connectors on it and allthough it actually fits in the slots it never detects a connection.

Hi again, Sorry it takes me so long to come back but I'm still having to move to another address before I can get on-line.
Thanks for your suggestions - I have had a partial success.... By setting the modem to not "Wait for a dial tone" it does now dial away - or at least I can hear it trying to connect, BUT it is still not connecting, and if I pick up the telephone at this point I can hear a dialling tone. The message now is a failure to connect rather than not receiving a dial tone.
I may be a little thick here, but why does 2 or 4 core cable make a difference? If new modems only need two surely the other two are just dead. You will have guessed that my new cable - supplied by the computer supplier has four cores.
This works with my friends laptop on her telephone line, but appears not to work with my computer and telephone line - Why????

im not sure why but if i connect a 4 wire to any of my new and old computers it will not work at all , when i connect the 2 wire cable it detects a dial tone and dials up no problems.
