      #260264 - Fri Feb 10 2006 02:11 PM

Please help this is driving me crazy, let me explain.
I am in the Isle of Man every 3 weeks and would like to use my laptop but I do not have access to a landline.I contacted Manx Telecom regarding 3G cards and they say they are for buissiness and I would have to put up £200 deposit and then I noticed they are selling the Nokia D211 card on there shop site.I have E-mailed them asking what this is and what it entails regarding cost usage, etc but they are not replying has anyone got a solution to my problem.

I use one of these when away from the office . . . . . 3G WiFi Data Card .

All the big net works have them on similar tariff prices, but if you purchase Orange, you can have a full refund after 14 days if its not to your liking, or you just don't want it any more.

Hi fusion
The thing is with the Isle of Man is that none of the mainland sims work over there you have to buy a manx sim so I assume that a laptop card with a mainland sim won't work either and Manx Telecom still havn't replied to my E-mail.
By the way I assume you access your office account through your wifi card would it work with NTL being cable or would I need to change ISP.

I phoned Orange yesterday, asked if you could use the Orange data card in the Isle of Man. I was told this could be arranged by simply turning on at there end an international roaming facility.

Things were looking up and I was hoping to give you some good news, but was then told that your download tariff, say 65MB which is included in the monthly price wouldn't count over there, and every MB downloaded would cost you ***£8 each***.
This would leave you with a sky high bill so that I'm afraid is not an option.

I would suspect all the UK big players will charge around the same to add to there profits each year.

I thought a work around would be to use either a free or paid for 'Hotspot' to send and receive data via a wireless card, but they are few and far between in the Isle of Man.

Best of luck with Nokia D211 card, but it is an old bit of kit now, and can only use GPRS, and not the much faster 3G.

As you've found, when it comes to telephone networks, the Isle of Man (like the Channel Islands) is abroad.
